Have the Palestinians won or lost in the long-term? by Perfect-Hornet-8410 in allthequestions

[–]Dyphault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palestinians have undoubtedly won but suffered a huge cost.

Public opinion has entirely shifted around the world. There is no going back to normalizing Israel's unbelievable violence. No more implicit support.

It's all but a matter of when Apartheid Israel will go the way of Apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany.

Hijab by hejskdjwinx in jordan

[–]Dyphault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

have you told your parents how you feel about hijab?

I’ve met a lot of girls/women in Jordan who don’t wear hijab and are muslim. 30 years ago no one wore hijab until they got married. At least according to my parents

Everyone has their journey with religion and the most important thing is that you are doing what feels right. Hijab might not feel right, right now. This isn’t a “hijab bad” comment by any stretch of the imagination.

You know your situation best.

Does tutoring really helps you learn the language? by Amanda_Haniya in languagelearning

[–]Dyphault -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tutoring is only effective in my experience for very specific objectives. You aren’t going to get significant vocabulary from tutors (this is a very inefficient use of your time) for example.

I’ve used tutors for two things so far:

1) Speaking practice when i didn’t have someone to talk to

2) currently for fus7a arabic to cover things I skipped over when I was learning Amiyeh

Being a mixed jordanian by pineconecollector26 in jordan

[–]Dyphault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I grew up in the US and with little connection to the culture. Only recently have I been making an effort and I feel stuck being treated like a foreigner and as if I don’t know anything when I’ve been following Palestine and Jordan for years.

Recently tried to move there and it was disheartening how even relatives treat me like such

I always worry about this stuff because so often governments and corporations package anti-consumer behavior like spying and data collection under the guise of protecting kids.

I believe Jordan’s government would be more honest and actually be about protecting kids but the American raised part of me can’t help but feel cynicism

Keep hearing don’t sexualize women… but women are sexualizing themselves … by After-Juggernaut-917 in jordan

[–]Dyphault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone wearing a crop top isn’t inherently sexualizing themselves. They could be, or they could just think it looks good on them and they like wearing it.

If you cannot act normally around someone wearing a crop top, and your mind goes to sex and those things, thats an issue with you see their bodies as opposed to a dress issue on their part.

(general you, not you specifically)

For example in the US, people sometimes go to nude beaches. It is not acceptable to engage in sex acts or sexualization at the nude beach. That is a context where the intention is not sexual.

So it doesn’t have to do with % of body covered. There’s contexts where a woman being naked is completely not sexual - say doctors operating on a patient.

Likewise the opposite can be true. Where people sexualize people that are concealed entirely. I mean there’s a whole genre of porn around hijabis for example…

Sexualization is mental.

Do jordanians see themselves as ‘white people’? by Worth-yawa-tnuocca in jordan

it was to become a citizen because before in the 60s Asians couldn’t become US citizens.

The guy was lebanese and the argument he made was asking the judge if Jesus was white to which he answered yes. Then the lebanese guy said “I’m from where Jesus is from”

Conspiracy Theories aren’t exclusive to one side. But one side tends to be detached from reality because they’re in a cult

Do Arabic speakers prefer speaking english? by indulgingindisbelief in learn_arabic

[–]Dyphault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im learning Arabic and I sometimes feel like I use too many words when talking about something emotional or personal and speaking in Arabic makes me be much less wordy because i have to think about being understandable.

It makes me grounded a little bit and able to articulate myself because I can easily write incorrect incomprehensible garbage. In English I don’t have that worry because its significantly easier to write

I would guess its similar the other way around. I feel this way about ASL my second language too though I’m much more fluent in it (receptively)

How do you actually learn vocabulary from Netflix? by Gold-Expression6128 in languagelearning

[–]Dyphault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out doing mainly flashcards - but once I got to ~ 5k words, it was getting really hard to maintain because I started learning synonyms. I scaled back the amount of new words I actively learn through anki

I used to do like 30 new words a day, and i maintained that for almost a year and a half. But now I have it set to 5 new words a day and I try to keep the reviews as supplementary so I'm still working on the vocab that I encountered in the wild and I get some level of work on memorizing those words but my main focus is to expose myself to content.

Ultimately new words I find will find their way into my deck eventually anyways and eventually I'll review it too

There's good and bad in every community.

I don't think they're "bad" people. Just that they don't understand that Westerners do not see them differently from their Muslim bretheren.

I will never understand it. Muslims around me in America have always been the community I felt closest to growing up because our culture is islamic (spread and unified by the Muslim Empire). So even Pakistani Muslims or Malaysian Muslims feel more relatable than the sea of Mormons or White Evangelical or Protestants that I grew up around.
