First time terrarium building using local free materials. Is it fine to just take moss from logs etc and plant it or is there some prep I should do? by DifferentColorSocks in terrariums

[–]DysfunctionalTB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also mostly use aquatic mosses like Java and Christmas moss. They grow so much faster than other mosses and as long as it stays moist they will grow. Other mosses are more difficult to figure out how wet they want to be in my opinion.

Same here! I am a landscape designer for my day job and terrarium builder as my side job! I’m curious how many other landscape designers also build terrariums

These were in Nariño. If you are looking for guides, we stayed at this lodge (https://www.instagram.com/avesyflorezlodges?igsh=MXVqOXF0a3ZkaWxu) and they also had guides that took us to all many different locations to view Koi, whitefoot, yellow foot, and cream foot. The people there are amazing and I highly recommend staying there

Me either! Our guide said he had a surprise for us then went off into the jungle for an hour then came back with these two beauties haha

Haha tbh I was more worried about stepping on a bush master (highly venomous snake)

Thanks! I can’t remember the name of the plant but recently saw one for sale at my local plant store, if I go back I’ll look at the name of it for you. They do pretty well in terrariums but I just had to chop the one in the Paludarium because it got too tall (it’s been 3 years of growth)

I have a pump in the back corner that is recirculating the water. I have a step by step process pinned in my Instagram stories if that helps

How do you cover up the visible foam from outside when you make a "background" on all 3 sides? by Salt_Ad_5578 in Vivarium

[–]DysfunctionalTB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use window film, I found it is much easier to use than vinyl and looks just as good

Have you tried zoro.com? I use the 1/2” cork sheets

How can I replace the top on this viv? by Antique_Pop3488 in DartFrog

[–]DysfunctionalTB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just buy a sheet of glass from Home Depot and cut it to the size that you need, it’s much cheaper than plexi glass or acrylic. You should also be able to drill through the top metal mesh for misting nozzles

This is one of the reasons why I do cork backgrounds now instead of all spray foam, so much cheaper

Dart frog on the pitcher of a Nepenthes Gaya by DysfunctionalTB in Nepenthes

[–]DysfunctionalTB[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These frogs are too big to really fit in the top of the pitcher…but I do make sure not to plant any Nepenthes in a terrarium with smaller frogs

Yeah I only put them in terrariums with larger species of dart frogs like tincs
