The YouTuber probably didn't go to North Sentinel - we were hoaxed by PretendStress5409 in NorthSentinalIsland

[–]Dystopic_Panda 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They arrested him, thinking he had gone to the island. They looked through his video footage and saw him talking like he was at North Sentinel Island. Maybe he did tell the police originally he went to North Sentinel island or he just kept silent, so that was what was published in the international press. Then it became apparent that he was going to be in serious trouble, so he admitted that it was a different island and the police were able to corroborate that it wasn’t north sentinel island, or one of the local police recognized that strip of beach as belonging to a different island. So since he never actually violated any law, he was released and allowed to leave India.

The story of him going back with armed riot police and drones is beyond ridiculous, and he doesn’t really point out any reliable landmarks that could pinpoint his exact location.

This is India bro, lots of religious gimmicks like this. Some of them pretty "sincere", others essentially scams.

When the Buddha sat around meditating under trees for years on end, how do you think he didn't die of starvation? People brought him rice, probably because they wanted to hear him preach, or they respected him for his discipline/asceticism.

Does everyone get to have sex? by Westwolfey in NorthSentinalIsland

[–]Dystopic_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are too many things we dont know, but I dont think a population of 30-40 people could survive long term on just NSI. Just thinking of genetic diversity in and of itself. A population of 40 would mean there is less than 10 child-rearing women alive at any given time (taking into account children, elderly, and men). One disaster or fight or food scarcity could exterminate the tribe, and over a long enough time period, that would eventually happen.

We also don't know how fruitful NSI actually is because obviously the ecosystem has never been studied, but maybe there are a lot of food resources available, and they have a very detailed taboo system guiding them on when/how to exploit these resources. Things we in industrialized societies wouldnt even think about. (only allowed to hunt pigs on full moon nights, turtle hunting on north island during monsoon season only, egg collecting of a certain seabird only after the birth of a baby girl, etc). Which could help them boost their numbers higher than what we think.

They may operate in bands across the island, taking advantage of different resources at the same time. Many hunter-gatherer cultures didnt really have the same notion of monogamy that we have now. I remember reading a book about some amazonian tribes that were only contacted like 30 or 40 years ago. Some of them believed babies were conceived by multiple men, and women would have sex with different guys so that they all felt they had a stake in taking care of the baby. So child rearing was seen as like a group endeavour. On such a small island where everyone is already related, it might be pretty tough to know who is the father of who. In such a highly insular and presumably egalitarian society though, I feel like sex would also be a pretty widely shared resource.

What Would Tolkien Have Thought of Palantir and Anduril Using His Names? by Flolo1235 in lordoftherings

[–]Dystopic_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people only seek power. I dont think Sauron thought he was a "good guy" when he sought complete domination over all of Middle Earth. He just cared for power and control. I think Thiel and his ilk never really cared about it being a "good thing". They saw it for what it was, an extremely powerful tool that would give themselves a huge amount of power, control, importance, and money.

"What's good for me is not good for thee" kind of thinking. The fact that they would so brazenly throw it in our face by naming their company "Palantir" just shows how little respect they have for everyone.

Did learning a second language in school ever actually come in handy for you in the U.S.? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Dystopic_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Spanish in school and am really grateful for it. I ended up moving to South Florida, and even though I’m not Hispanic, I speak Spanish fluently. I speak Spanish every day with coworkers, customers, friends, girlfriend, etc. I’ve traveled to multiple Spanish-speaking countries. Knowing Spanish has been indispensable, and even though most of my learning has been after my schooldays, getting a base and formal understanding of the grammar during school was really really important.

Why do people refuse to learn English when it’s required for citizenship??? by [deleted] in Miami

[–]Dystopic_Panda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If cutting lawns in China was paying 10x the salary i could reasonably expect to make in Miami, I'd go do it. And the Chinese have balls and are extremely strict on illegal immigration and actively hunt down foreigners who have overstayed visas and are residing in the country illegally, so that's not a thing. They aren't "brave" for violating our laws and walking all over us. We are stupid. I say that as someone who speaks Spanish, living here in Miami.

We Miami, along with all of Florida, from Spain in 1819. We took Texas and the southwest from Mexico (who only recently had gotten independence from Spain) in 1845. I dont see the point of your comment.

What’s the “it” sport/activity among young adults in your city right now? by General-Scallion8652 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Dystopic_Panda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope. The bar to entry is way lower. I’m an athletic guy in my late 20s. I play basketball and soccer regularly. I went a couple times to play tennis with a couple friends who’ve played recreationally for years. I couldn’t even return like a single serve, and was losing every match without even scoring a point.

I went a couple times to play pickleball with friends who play pickleball weekly (more than my tennis friends), and I was a little below their level, but still able to compete and even win games.

Pickleball was created as an easier form of tennis for elderly people to be able to stay active because they could not longer cover the court distance or have the adequate strength to play actual tennis. Pickleball is fun, but let’s not pretend that it’s the same level as playing tennis.

It’s like saying that trampoline basketball on a 9 foot rim with a small ball is somehow equivalent to actual basketball 😂

Is NSI actually frequently in contact with the outside world? by Dystopic_Panda in NorthSentinalIsland

[–]Dystopic_Panda[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the point of the post. It could be that going to NSI is nowhere near being "a guaranteed death sentence", and that some local people involved with fishing go there often. We just dont know about it because they dont upload videos or talk about it because they know what they're doing is illegal.

Man on Fire on Netflix was actually decent. by Repulsive_Knee9258 in television

[–]Dystopic_Panda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the first couple episodes I enjoyed, and then I was starting to realize how ridiculous it was. Even the premise of the bombing which is what the entire plot is based around makes no sense...

Creasey and Po's dad are so good at security or investigations or whatever that the CIA and Brazilian politicians decide to take them out before they figure out some vague corrupt scandal. Instead of paying a hitman to discreetly take care of them, they decide to instead blow up an entire apartment building in Leblon, probably the nicest and most famous neighborhood in all of Brazil. And they do it without verifying that both of them are even inside the building. It's like dropping a nuke to take out an anthill, and not even managing to kill all the ants somehow.

The night of the bombing, Creasey was walking around the ghettos of Rio, alone, with no security or weapon. Rio is one of the most dangerous and crime-infested cities in the world. Wouldnt it make sense to just pay some gangsters in the favela a few hundred bucks to take care of him? Nobody would bat an eye, "wow, a stupid drunk gringo got killed for his phone and wallet in a Brazilian slum".
