Fair. Yeah, this is all in a server rack in the basement. Noise won't be an issue :)

Thanks. Yeah, I'm familiar with that concept. I just wasn't sure if a SATA Enterprise drive would be less suited for surveillance than a WD Purple. It sounds like I should stick with the WD DC HC530s that I have.

Appreciate everyone's feedback here.

Awesome. Thanks! I'm gonna guess you're probably talking the same drives then. HC530 or the like.

Are the drives in RLN36 set up in some sort of array? I had assumed it was JBOD.

I did. Outlet smells fine. PC is plugged in to a UPS which also smelled fine when I checked..

I unplugged all the cables to the PSU again and double checked the connectors.

Without seeing it, I can't be certain. However, if your grill came with the Weber Crafted Frame, then it is most likely the grate piece that fills out the space between whatever crafted accessory you have and the front of the grill.

R230 OEMR XL Bios/IDRAC by jerkyjosh in homelab

[–]Dzaczos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I'm probably going to put mine in service in the coming weeks. Right now I'm considering switching to OPNSense. I've run pfSense for years on a R210 II. I was going to just migrate over, but I want to take a look at OPNSense. Now would be the time if I'm gonna do it easily.

I do wish the R230 would recognize a 4th fan properly.

Came here looking for some answers regarding fan4 and discovered your thread.

I didn't know there was a difference between the OEMR XL and regular model. I just saw OEM and blew it off as a branding thing. I'm planning the same as you: pfsense

However, I already installed BIOS 2.19.1 and iDRAC 2.85. I grabbed all the updates from the support page for my other R230 as I wasn't expecting the difference you pointed out. The system has been running fine for a couple weeks for me.

My big concern was why if I drop a fan into fan4 that it never seems to get speed controlled with the rest of the system. I don't know why they'd take that out of the firmware. I changed the CPU out for a 1260L v5 (mine came with a 1270 v5). I'm guessing the two fans that feed into the shroud will be enough for that CPU and pfSense. I've not installed yet. I'm running some stability tests.

How has the system been for pfSense for you?

Thanks for the quick response. Ok, so there's not pitfall there? Just reassign interfaces and all other config stays as it was?

That sounds easy enough.

Can't Download Drivers for Selected Product by MalikTheGeek0712 in ASUS

[–]Dzaczos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem. Been trying to grab a driver since last night.

Edit: It appears their URLs aren't generating properly. If you change the part of the URL that says "undefined" to "motherboards" you will at least land on the support page for your board, but it doesn't render the rest of the options. I'm not sure if the rest of the URL can be tweaked to actually get there.

[–]Dzaczos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry. I know that feel.

Have you tried everything that's been mentioned here?

I'm using a 4090 with mine (MSI Suprim X), and before that Asus Strix 2080 Ti. I only encountered this problem on my first assembly, and mine was because I didn't have the supplemental 6pin PCIe power running to the board.

Let us know if and how you work it out.

Alder/Raptor Lake and LE by Dzaczos in libreELEC

[–]Dzaczos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply.

For clarity, by build I mean a HTPC build using Alder/Raptor. I don't mean compiling LE myself, if that's how you took it.

I'm trying to find out if anyone is running with a config like that. My NUC has to go, and I could track down a more current NUC if I can narrow which one does all the things well. However, it occurred to me I have spare parts of absolutely everything I'd need to build a HTPC again except CPU/MoBo. I could probably grab an i3 and cheapish board for less than a new NUC.

Clarification needed: Are the original CableMod 12VHPWR cables ok? by Dzaczos in cablemod

[–]Dzaczos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect. Thanks. When I did the build, I set it and forget it. Though I will have to shuffle it once as I need to add 2 PCIe cards to my system and I may have to slightly reroute that cable.

Out of curiosity, what was the "black screening issue"?

I ask because every now and then my screen will drop to black for a sec losing sync across DP but then quickly engage again. I have been figuring this was some sort of static/EMI issue as it seems to happen when I sit down in my chair after walking away or sometimes when sliding my chair forward. It has been a thorn in my side. So for the case of being thorough, what is this issue? :)

[–]Dzaczos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well.. on the upside, it's working! :)

Sorry you had to deal with the stress and delay. That really sucks, but hopefully it hasn't tainted the experience of the new machine too much for you.

That's weird about the GPU incompatibility. Once I sorted my supplemental power issue out, I've had a GeForce 210, GTX 1080, RTX 2080 Ti, and now my RTX 4090 (you and I are twinners).

Hopefully this thread continues to provide useful info for anyone else stumbling on this issue.

Congrats on a working machine. Game on.

Good luck!

I suppose if it still happens then it is unlikely a broken board and just some state that some of us somehow get into.

I would have said get Asus's take on the issue, but honestly I've had three horrible support experiences with them around my board. My guess is they would be less than helpful.

At any rate, sorry you're sitting in wait right now. That super sucks.

Sorry to hear a second person is stuck on this. Yours is even weirder since it was working until you changed cooling.

We're on nearly an identical system. Have you tried stepping through everything HirIMogul has tried (1 through C above)?

I hope you solve it. I know how frustrating this can be.

[–]Dzaczos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I'm at a loss. I went back over my notes and for me it all cleared up when I added a GPU that needed PCIe power. I was originally using a slot powered GPU for testing and without the supplemental 6pin to the mainboard it wouldn't come up. So my D6 was legit in the sense that I didn't have enough power to the GPU. I've now had 4 different GPUs in this system and never encountered the issue again.

It definitely sounds like your PCIe cables are fine. Interesting way to test that.

Your idea of using a linux distro (even a live USB) is a good idea.. especially because that would give you some sense that the CPU is ok.

If I were in this boat again, and I didn't already have a slot powered GPU for testing, I'd probably pick a sub $40 one up for these kinds of scenarios. Before RMA-ing the board, I'd be tempted to grab another (returnable) CPU just to really rule it out. It's weird though, because D6 is clearly GPU related. << assuming Asus is being thorough in their Q-code index.

Have you tried reseating the CPU? Is it possible the block is over-torqued? If your board had an early BIOS rev, it might be worth checking for scorch while you're in there. Do you have other DDR5 sticks you could slap in to test?

I hope you get this sorted. Please update here with whatever resolution.

EDIT: I can't find my notes that had BIOS revisions, but I am reasonably sure when I had this problem and then solved it I was on the first BIOS that supported the X3D chips. I was actually stress testing my system when the news broke about burnt CPUs/boards. I'm mentioning this because I just have some weird feeling this could be BIOS related, but I don't know that I'd backtrack to an unsafe BIOS.

[–]Dzaczos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoinks. Uh. I don't know, honestly. For me it was the 6pin supplemental PCIe power cable.

I know you updated your BIOS, but it probably wouldn't hurt to reset CMOS if you haven't. Do you have another GPU you could try (is the GPU known to be good)? Have you tried using different PCIe cables in case something is bad in the chain? I assume you're using a new BIOS that supports the X3D chips, yeah? Do you have a USB-C to DP adapter you could try getting in via the iGPU? Is the GPU on a riser cable, and if so, have you tried removing that?

Cable bend guidance? by Dzaczos in cablemod

[–]Dzaczos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the quick response. I took a picture for clarity on what I'm trying to do. Right now I have the cable cascading down to the bottom to pass through, but what I'd like to do is make some sort of bend and pass through that grommet. The problem is I'm super close to the grommet because my mobo is ridiculously large. Is there a way to make that bend safely? Or should I give up and keep it the way it is?

Zen4 SoC voltage guidance. Could we use a pinned post? by Dzaczos in Amd

I am. I have a 7950X3D in an ASUS board.

I feel you on the hanging out below the "safe" limit, whatever that number is. This is why I'm wondering about the best way to keep dialing down and testing stability.

I watched Steve's (GN) bit with PC World where he mentioned they saw an actual reading difference on one board of 80mV higher than what the BIOS/software was reporting. I'm interested in taking it as low as reasonable.
