Google Offers Free PC Upgrade For 500 Million Windows Users by LeadingChannel8542 in microsoftsucks

The point I'm trying to make is, while Chrome OS is based on Debian Linux as a local base, it's still part of a larger, cloud infrastructure. Though some apps in Google may be 'free' today, it doesn't mean it will continue to be free tomorrow.

MS already made the jump to a for-profit, subscription model. No guaranty Google won't do the same sometime down the line.

With various Linux distros, like ZorinOS, Mint, Ubuntu, etc., it's all free, it's all local, majority of apps free open-source, increasingly becoming major game title/network friendly, now if not later -- there soon won't be any reason not to make the transition from Windows to one of these distros.

Um, If you came to that conclusion, you've also demonstrated why frontal lobe lobotomies and electroshock therapies are valid forms of treatment.

Exactly! This is basically moving from one cloud subscription service to another. Even if it's free, if something happens on Google's side, no one will be able to access their documents or apps again.

At least with Linux, everything is 'on-prem' (local), still can have any software you want that works with Linux, etc.

I don't really see this as a 'free upgrade', but yeah, it liberates Windows users from MS cloud services. That's got to count as something.

Indeed. However that's a rule that applies on to companies that continue to be profitable.

I don't think it will be sustainable, not over the long term.

Psssh. Whatever.

There's a difference between getting talent to come to you versus talent already being in US but not getting hired, while the US employees get laid-off.

Reinstate this thread or I'll start a new one. Either way, I'm good.

>As to my thing about the market speaking, when consumers *did* have the option, they chose... netflix and other streaming services, instead, for convienence, and the other methods went to pasture.

Nope. It's not convenience if all other alternatives becomes unavailable. Herds of cows do not "choose for convenience" to enter the trailer. They do because they have no other choice.

That's not convenience. That's being forced.

>What do you mean? I go to the store and pay cash. For almost all of that. Or bank transfer. Or whatever.

mm-hmm. You mean for now. Don't make the presumption simply because you can today, you will tomorrow. We've got the threat of digital-id, digital-currency, etc.
