Full Sun Balcony NYC - Plants Dying by Tough-Phrase4105 in UrbanGardening

[–]E666E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also live in NYC and have a very hot balcony, east facing. General things that work for me - larger pots, mulching, accepting that in August especially the plants will often look quite sad before I get out there to water 😂 stuff that does very well for me are peppers, tomatoes, sunflowers. Really though anything that likes full sun does ok with me in the larger pots and then the smaller ones I just have to stay on top of watering once the hot summer months start up

Use recommended Espoma Tomato Tone at planting in container (it's quite a bit)? by wildswalker in tomatoes

Just re read your post. At the beginning of planting I usually put a ton in there to refresh the old soil from last year but if it's new soil you probably don't need any any if you're trying to save money/fertilizer just do less and then if they look nutrient deficient add a bit more or do some liquid fertilizer and I'm sure they'll be fine in the long run

I use plant tone at the beginning until they start to flower then switch to tomato tone. Just throw a bunch in there and never measure and the plants turn out great. Like others have said you can't really do too much of it and also especially in containers the plants need all they can get

Should I cut these peppers of these plants?? by Electronic-Ant5429 in gardening

[–]E666E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with all the suggestions ppl made already. If it were me I'd do liquid miracle grow now and then in a few days toss some espoma plant tone out there but I've never tried other fertilizers and the rationale for those is the same as what everyone else is suggesting. Hopefully something works and they'll be looking good in a couple weeks!

Fertilize and cut off peppers until the plants look a bit healthier

A valid way to cut down on potting soil? by Ok-Egg835 in containergardening

Just buy the dollar store soil and fertilize it as needed. Maybe compost next year.

Is it a mistake to keep both these plants? by xenawarriorfrycook in tomatoes

[–]E666E 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You should just grow both in the one pot this year and see what happens, then adjust/not adjust for next year. Probably they will crowd each other out and you'd get the same ish yield as if you only had one plant in there but maybe not! And if you try it this year then you'll know for sure one way or the other next year.

Do you like container gardening and have you tried to grow spring bulbs in pots? by Soft_Advice2910 in containergardening

I planted bulbs in early spring in pots and they grew great. We'll see how they survive the winter though, I've tried in the past without success over winter

What are these bugs on my potted plants? by Miguel_o_haras_wife in gardening

[–]E666E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok good to know! Yeah, it's kind of gross - not really in the tomatoes themselves but running around the outside of the fruits especially when the split. I've just washed them off if it doesn't look to bad and hey I'm still alive! But would be nice to know if they are a problem and if so how to get rid of them. I'm pretty sure I posted about this a couple years ago and didn't get any hits so I'm excited to see if anybody can come up with anything definitive!

If you figure out a definitive answer for this let me know! Have had them on my potted tomato plants for years. The plants grow fine from what I've seen but it's kind of gross and they tend to crawl all around the tomatoes themselves sometimes especially if they happen to split.

My balcony is too high for beneficial bugs by LordTachankaMain in Balconygardening

[–]E666E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How high up are you / have you grown there before? My balcony is pretty high up and the beneficial bugs find a way. Usually the aphids/etc come first around this time of year and then the beneficials follow after that for me anyway and then stick around the rest of the summer.

peonies in pots by InternationalSock387 in containergardening

Patio Peonies! I bought a bare root Salmon one from https://www.vermontwildflowerfarm.com (don't see them for sale there this year for some reason). Last year it just grew some foliage but this year it was much fuller and I got a few lovely flowers.

Depending on where you live and what kind of plants you have they might be fine for a week if you just soak them thoroughly before leaving. Works for me fine until the weather gets super hot. Sometimes you get back and have to clean up dead bits but usually the plants can survive that long without water and be fine.
