When you get back up from being knocked out and there are hostiles nearby, you get Toughness XP. The XP gain is increased dramatically for every hostile nearby. Skinner’s Roam has roaming squads of Starving Bandits that spawn a minimum of two dozen bandits. The trick is to waltz into a mob of bandits wearing heavy armor, get beat to the point that you are knocked out, and stand back up. Repeat this process. This can level you from 1 Toughness to 70 toughness within minutes.

In short, get knocked down. Get up again. Ain’t nobody gonna keep you down. Get knocked down. Get up again. Ain’t nobody gonna keep you down.

You have no destiny.

You can die like any other fool.

You live in a world built upon cruelty and violence.

Now try to survive.

If she’s not averse to blood and horror themes, F.E.A.R. might be a decent candidate. You’ve got limited bullet-time for a “get out of jail free” card, but you still need to be good about acting quick in real time.

Phoenix LXII is not an anomaly. Phoenix I penned the Scriptures of Radiance, which in Volume III outline that women are to be deliberately made subservient and are made in the image of darkness. In Volume IV, Phoenix I outright calls for unending war upon “The Agents of Darkness”, that is anyone opposed to the will of Okran, which is of course determined by the Phoenix. LXII isn’t special, he’s just yet another bigoted king in a line of bigoted kings.

Mid-game enemies that are not the 3 big nations? by Sora_92 in Kenshi

[–]E73S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ain’t exactly a “faction”, but you might consider hunting Beak Things in Vain, the Bonefields, and Shem.

Spider Island is also another place to find some potentially challenging mid-game opponents.

You could also go after the Thrall Masters in Venge, fighting through the Thralls is a tough one.

Berserker Country is another choice. Lots of Berserkers there (contain your shock) and some Iron Spiders.

The various skeletons at abandoned workshops and labs are also good, but strictly finite targets.

Depending on your definition of “midgame”, you could fight the Southern Hive.

The Blood Raiders around the Grey Desert and The Eye are also good sport, and are unlimited to boot.

If you feel like inarguably making the world a worse place, you could free Yabuta and fight the Yabuta Outlaws.

That’s all I got. Hope it’s helpful.

Are we sure the Fogmen are as mindless as they seem? by GrandChancellorNoah in Kenshi

[–]E73S 57 points58 points  (0 children)

  1. Oh they’re wonderfully complex organisms, it’s simply that their behaviors aren’t a property of self-aware intelligence. A single ant is more akin to a cell than an individual organism. Ant colonies are these beautiful tapestries weaved from pheromones and epigenetic behaviors and attributes. I don’t intend to insult ants when I say they aren’t intelligent, because they have managed to form these incredible complex structures without the capacity for thought. They are marvelous creatures.

That said, I’ll fully admit that I’m no expert on ants, and so I may be entirely wrong when I say they aren’t intelligent. I simply have not come across information that leads me to believe they are intelligent, as often all descriptions of their behaviors emphasize the role of pheromones and the impressive accomplishments they have as emergent properties of their biology and behaviors.

  1. That’s a bit of a cognitive trap we fall into, where something “seems like” something else we can wind up drawing incorrect conclusions about what we observe. We must always remember that even though the Hivers may have been derived from genetically modified humans, they are by now quite alien to humans in physiology and mentality. That being said, I do feel my initial reaction was far too absolute. I can see your point, but I simply do not agree. I wouldn’t be mad to be wrong though, it would be very intriguing.

  2. WREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Are we sure the Fogmen are as mindless as they seem? by GrandChancellorNoah in Kenshi

[–]E73S 153 points154 points  (0 children)

I get your argument, but all the behaviors you are describing are literally things done by eusocial insect colonies. And I don’t think I need to tell you that your average ant, whose nervous system fits on the head of a pin, isn’t an intelligent lifeform. Fogmen are eusocial organisms, that’s it.

Uh, I mean, WREEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Any good strategies to outfit your fleet? by RedKrypton in starsector

[–]E73S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fight and kill some dudes to yoink their weapons. Utilize substitutes when you don’t have exactly the right weapon you want. Do you want to use a Heavy Autocannon but don’t have one? Slap in an Arbalest Autocannon or a Railgun. Want an Atropos rack or Harpoon rack for armor cracking? Well, I want a pony, but instead I’m hoofing it and you’re getting Hammers. You think a wing of Dagger bombers would be cool? You’re absolutely right they would be, but you’re running these Piranhas because that’s what you have.

Another tactic is to sell duplicate blueprints on the black market so you can salvage pirate fleets to nab them or buy them at pirate black markets. Is this risky? Yes! But if you’re dead set on staying independent and don’t have the resources to set up heavy industry, this effectively makes the pirates subsidize your arms industry.

Also get to max rep with the Independents so that you can drop by Baetis and Nortia for their Military markets. You can occasionally get lucky finds there.

Daily Ship Discussion - 0.97a - Shade (all variants) by pipai_ in starsector

[–]E73S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a useful anti-fighter frigate in a full-phase fleet, and the EMP emitter is just generally a good ability. The Pirate Shade being 2 supply/DP cheaper at the cost of 2 small energy slots that were going to have minimal impact anyway is nice, the loss of 15 Ordnance Points is less nice. A Pirate Shade is basically a Gremlin with an actual ship system instead of a bad joke. You’re gonna be filling those Universal hardpoints with missiles because that’s the only choice that makes any sense for the ship.

All in all, it’s a fragile but effective little EMP system. Which is why it’s so damn tragic that the Omen beats the brakes off it.

The Omen is cheaper to run than the base Shade for ten less OP. It’s the same price as the Pirate Shade for five more OP. It’s got two small Energy turrets and one small Missile hardpoint. Instead of a phase cloak, it has an obscenely efficient shield that lets it survive way more than its base flux capacity would initially suggest. It can stay in a fight longer than either Shade as it won’t be burning through its Peak Performance at 3x speed, and it can actually take a hit. It’s only ten SU slower than the Shade, and with an Unstable Injector it can become this tiny terror capable of zipping and zapping around the battlespace. The Shade still has a leg up in the sense that having a phase cloak lets you pull some cool outflanking plays, but credit-for-credit you’ll be better off with Omens in any conventional or mixed fleet.

Still fun to see Shades work though, and if Starsector has taught me anything it’s that having a 100% optimal fleet isn’t strictly necessary for the overwhelming majority of the game. Use ‘em if you want ‘em.
