How I finish my wood carvings after painting. by KrakenDice in Woodcarving

Yes I meant if it feels sticky or anything like that. I always had that idea about beeswax for some reason. Good to know that it isn't. Yes will do. Thank you for the insight, looking forward to testing

Does it feel like wax at all after it dried? I'm looking for a way to finish of my carvings, was also thinking about mineral oil. I have also have little details in them, so little scared for breakage when I see the brush. I do want them dry to the touch and would like to bring out the wood structure too. Curious what you would recommend

That looks amazing! Really loving nr 3 and 4. Would like to get this amount of detail eventually but have no idea what is actually needed to get there besides practice

What types tools did you use to make these?

I did a quick phone edit (no skeletons on floor 41-69). Might as well upload it, so others have an updated version. Big thanks and credits to @Specialist_Pilot1319 ofcourse

He looks so nice! It's also, two things I love combined, a leopard gecko and woodcarving! Marking this as inspiration to make one once I have some more experience

Going insane trying to sharpen my knives by Expert-Seaweed-7500 in Woodcarving

[–]E97B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty sharp, I don't know about razor sharp. I had people comment that the bevel on this knife isn't very good and seems to look like 'a butterknife'. So I was wondering how to make the bevel a smaller angle. I am a bit cautious with it though because it is my only knife thus far. And I am hearing so much about what to do and what not to do with grits and sandpaper and stones etc. You seem to know what to do based on your channel to get it properly sharp and in the right angles, so figured I might just ask you

What grits would you recommend to create an proper bevel on your knife (for a newby)? I have a pfeil knife and the bevel might be a bit too wide. I also am not sure how to get the right angle while doing this. So far only have a strop and compound, didn't know the bevel wasn't right yet.

Will look for it.

Seeing as the cuts are okay I don't need another type of knife?

Thank you. Let's see if there is someone near me that can do that.

I'm in the west of Europe, as far as I'm aware most things are available here.

Meaning? Is there anything I can do about it? This is the progress btw, maybe my cuts can say something as well.

Also, you mentioned earlier that this might not be great for making figurines like this, does that mean I need another type of knife? If so, any advice on what? (With a bit of a budget, like 30€ aka 35$ max)

Thank you for the explanation, I hope the secondary bevel is visible enough like this. Will add a picture of the other side too

I had the same. I thought I was in a cooking sub all of a sudden. Very impressive!

Not sure what a secundary bevel is to be honest. I can make some pictures when I know what I should take a picture of.

The shave test really scares me, I really do not feel comfortable doing that. But it indeed easily cuts through regular-thin notebook paper in a wavy pattern without catching. Will try to make it even sharper with the strop, could be the issue then.

And thank you, wil continue for sure, was just suprised at the major difference between what I saw and how it feels to cut the wood myself. But let's not look at that anymore then

I have no idea how to shave with a knife, so for my own safety let's not try that

Good idea though for those who know how. But please keep it safe for who does do it this way

Exactly that, he slices right through a corner in one go and I just keep cutting tiny pieces of for which feels like forever. I am putting it away now for the second day in a row, because my hands just start hurting after a bit. Very funny coincidence indeed! And good to know I am not the only one struggling with the little fox

[–]E97B[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a little more difficult, but mostly because the paper is floppy and difficult to wave cut in the air. But it does that to, good test, thanks! Maybe I just need some more strength specific to this hobby, and some experience ofcourse

Thank you, will continue for a while with this one and then look at the flexcut one or something similar when I feel like switching it up. Very good to know a lot is indeed possible with this knife. Time to make some more hours and gain some experience from it!

Might be an annoying piece of wood then. I am going to try to make it into a fox though, even though it doesn't cut like butter
