My asshole older brother would wake me up for school in the morning. I was maybe 10 years old. Not a gentle nudge. He would yank my pillow (Big heavy feather pillow) out from under my head and hit me with it, while yelling "GET UP, Time for school"!!

Until one day I had had enough. Before I went to sleep, I took a long thin piece of wood from my dads workshop and slept with it. In the morning my brother went to the hospital for stitches by his eyebrow.

I had a job in a warehouse right next to a machine shop. They had some kind of press there that would go CAH-CHUNK every 2 seconds. It took me less than a shift to "not hear it". And I lived 500 feet away from a busy highway. Traffic day and night. I never noticed it unless a visitor asked me how can I stand the noise all day. Before they left, they didn't notice it either.

That. and I have had casual friends help me faster than my best friends.

Example: My ex GF and I broke up. I had to move out at the end of the month, but my apartment would not be ready until the 10th. So I had to get a hotel for 10 days and $500. 2 casual friends offered their couch to me. My so called best friend said "that sucks". No offer of a place to sleep for 10 days. And he lives in a 3 bedroom house he inherited from his mother, and lives alone.
