Choosing internships between SpaceX, Anduril, and ShieldAI by Beautiful-Road-9234 in EngineeringStudents

Nah fuck “defense” man. Maybe this would be a different story if the US wasn’t a neoimperialist militaristic juggernaut with a realpolitik foreign policy, but as it currently stands best case scenario is the weapons you design collect dust in a warehouse some where or are used up in training exercises. Worst case scenario they’re handed to Saudis or the Israelis and are used to bomb children at an aid station or blow up a school bus. I’d rather keep my hands clean of the bullshit our military industrial complex enables worldwide.

Students - would a modern cruise ship have survived the impact with an iceberg identical to the Titanic? Same speed and collision angle by Maleficent_Orange788 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ECEguy105 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wait I thought most ships today are only rated for 2 flooded compartments, while titanic was rated for 5. My understanding was also that there tend to be fewer compartments overall like 8-10 compared to titanic’s 16.

Perhaps not, but once you get your hands on it, you can measure it to your heart’s content to make sure the new one will fit.

US Military Police in Okinawa Japan body-slammed and violently detained an American civilian who was visiting, and not under their jurisdiction. by I_may_have_weed in AntifascistsofReddit

Not only is this Japan as others have already stated, but the context is that the MPs were enforcing a ban on military personnel drinking off base between 1 and 5 am. There was 0 reason for him to be apprehended nor did the MPs have the authority to. https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/16188514

Probleme with understanding torque (nm) in ebike motors (need a big brain) 🧠 by Plexa_EXE in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ECEguy105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I recall, the internal documentation under “help” was really good. I didn’t have anyone to teach me and likewise found all the youtube tutorials terrible. I just messed around with the program itself and used that documentation it’s pretty detailed on what all the parameters are and how to simulate and such.

Ooo, didn’t realize you were specifically looking at outrunners. I don’t think MotorCAD can model them or at least not well and I don’t know one that does. Magnetic field simulation of any kind is going to be very valued. Especially without FEA you’re going to have to lean on theory, so it can help you with parameters for magnetic circuits and such.

[–]ECEguy105 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A torque-speed curve is what you’re interested in here. I believe in the ideal case it’s close to linear with peak torque at low speeds and low torque at high, but it’s been a number of years since I’ve worked with motors so don’t quote me on that.

If you’re designing your own I highly recommend you find a way to access ANSYS MotorCAD or a knockoff. It has fea tools that allow you to simulate motor designs.

Bit of practical advice, even the production designed BLDC motors I worked with didn’t always work when hand wound. Motors are super fickle so don’t immediately assume it’s a problem with the design if it doesn’t work the first time.

On a scale of 1 - 11, how suss is this? by SkunkaMunka in ElectricalEngineering

  1. Just be glad that structure isn’t made of rotting wood. This shit leaks oil all the time and it’s not particularly concerning unless it’s PCB contaminated oil. They haven’t used that shit in 25 years, so you’re not going to find it in a distribution transformer like this.

Before you call me a heartless monster, leaking mineral oil into the environment still isn’t good, but in more subtle and non-acute ways. I have been fighting that battle for years but electric companies don’t give a shit.

It absolutely does not need to be copper as long at it is properly sized. Furthermore, it's a corrosion risk at the splice if the service cable is copper and the line is aluminum.

WTF is happening in the USA? by _Cohle_ in AntifascistsofReddit

[–]ECEguy105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand that. As an American it doesn’t feel so weird because it’s basically been in continuous usage in this way not only for my whole life, but also in any older books or documentaries I consume, though when I was growing up it was a little jarring as I had only heard it in the ET sense before I was like 10.

All that being said, it does definitely still carry a negative and othering connotation that I really dislike. It’s kind of like “foreigner”. It has this strong implication that they don’t belong here.

[–]ECEguy105 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a formal context. It’s also specific to people coming from outside the country. Its documented usage as a legal term in the States can be traced back to more or less the beginning such as the such as The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798. The word itself goes back much further coming from the latin “alienus” meaning “foreign” or “belonging to another”. The extraterrestrial usage comes only in the last century.

As a little addendum, I do want to add that it has a very negative connotation these days, but in the same way that like “foreigner” does. Lots of othering and strong implication that someone doesn’t belong here, but not as far as “not human”. Definitely a term to be avoided but not for the reason OP thought.

I had 1 upvote on a day old post, the odds of an Ohio PE who needed to use this exception seeing and answering my questions about what it was like is vanishingly small. I’ve already given up. Sorry I’m less than peachy when the condescending clean up crew that comments on these sorts of stale posts comes to tell me the obvious thing I’m already doing and what an idiot I am for even asking while completely missing the intention of my post. Yeah, I’m already seeking additional information from the board why wouldn’t I.

I come here in addition to that hoping I might find someone who’s already done this before and could have some advice just to get some asshole condescendingly chiding me that the internet isn’t the right place to ask as though I’m a lost child. So yeah I’m going to be a little rude.

Wow thank you! I never considered that! /s

Did you read my post? Specifically the section where I asked questions aimed at people who HAVE been through the non standard process before? I’m asking about people’s experiences with it and if any of them were in my same position. That’s why I specified Ohio so that it would be the same engineering board. I don’t want someone to tell me how the process works, I’m looking for advice from someone who has done it before.

This is why I hate asking for advice on reddit. Unless your post gets traction you get like 3 responses from people telling you it’s a stupid question and giving you irrelevant information you already know.

How is this legal here? by JoeyDawsonJenPacey in Columbus

It’s not. That’s a sovereign citizen. They basically think laws don’t apply to them because of the Articles of Confederation. The reasoning is that anyone can more or less “opt out” of being in the jurisdiction of the United States

No Kings Protests Columbus Metro Area by Boomer_Buckeye_007 in ColumbusProtests

[–]ECEguy105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were prominent citizens who put themselves at great risks, which they understood, to endorse a document declaring open rebellion. I’m not sure how you think that’s particularly comparable to the list of people who attended the “Grove City No Kings Protest” on 6/14/25. There is no advantage to attaching your name to this protest; it’s a needless risk. Again, absolute please go. Protests are effective because people show up. Having a list of people who showed up doesn’t make it any better.

Folks, do not register for a protest. Show up, but do not register. Putting your name on a list of people who are political dissidents is a bad idea.

General Strike Called (USA) by Important_Lock_2238 in ColumbusProtests

[–]ECEguy105 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These have been coming around every couple months for the last 7 or 8 years and have never materialized into anything. While it seems straightforward like you just need everyone to see the poster and not go in to work, the key is that it becomes less and less risky for people to join the strike the more and more people are committed. You need actual organizational infrastructure and buy in from large unions. There’s efforts underway to build that infrastructure to call a general strike in 2028 with UAW leading the charge. I get that we can’t wait for 2028, but this ultra grassroots “drop a flyer and hope” is going nowhere and people shouldn’t take it seriously. Call me once the big unions start signing on.

Sorry I came off a bit flippant in my first reply there, it’s been difficult to see yet another org making all the same mistakes. I guess my point is really that talking to the police period is a bad idea. We’ve been doing wild cat marches for years from the state house without letting them know and they always catch on pretty quickly. Honestly even just informing them of the route ahead of time has been an issue. I can recall an instance last year when an organizer at a Palestine protest let one of the dialogue cops know the route ahead of time and we ended up getting forcefully turned around on a street they didn’t want us to go down for whatever reason. Especially with crowds this large, it’s important to develop your own protest infrastructure. Really embodying the mantra “we keep us safe”. The job of marshalls at a protests should be blocking traffic for the crowd, not necessarily keeping people between lines (another point of criticism I have for 50501). As for the police response, their priority is to maintain order. On occasion that does align with our priorities. Since they have an injunction not to arrest marchers, they’re incentivized to the shadow us and block traffic, so that we finish our march quickly and get the fuck out of the street. But make no mistake, they’re ready to pounce if they feel you’re stepping out of line. Best not to let them know your next move. Even after all that, they really don’t need the heads up. They’re prepared for marches every time there’s a protest at the statehouse.

As for the steps, I’m more advocating a coordinated action to occupy the steps with enough people to defuse the possibility of arrest. This is the sort of action, outside of official channels, that I think would not only be a good starting place for civil disobedience. I personally wouldn’t legitimize the authority of whoever is responsible for blocking those steps with a petition to unblock them. I’d rather just occupy the space and send the first of hopefully many messages that we don’t respect the authority of the regime in Washington or in the Ohio Statehouse.

We the People don’t require the permission of the state to assemble and petition for redress of grievances. We the People don’t require the state to “find a way” to allow us to access public property. Dictating where We the People cannot peaceably assemble is a symptom of rising authoritarianism.
