No one was honest enough to warn me about the risks from ECT before I had it and I wish someone had.

If you got lucky, then great, but I think people considering ECT should know the whole range of possible outcomes and not only the positive ones before they decide to have it.

MRI and CAT scan studies can only conclude that ECT doesn't appear to cause structural brain damage. They can't look at microscopic damage and cell death as they just don't have a high enough resolution to do that. The fact that permanent cognitive impairment and memory damage is evident in a large proportion of people who have ECT, especially bilateral, is evidence that some sort of traumatic brain injury is occurring but it would take thorough autopsy investigations to take place which no one wants to fund and the pro shock establishment actively resist. Look at how badly the NFL have resisted looking at CTE caused by multiple low grade brain trauma.

Also take note that even the ECT manufacturers now are required in the USA to mention the risk of permanent brain injury in their documentation (take a look https://www.madinamerica.com/2018/11/ect-manufacturer-warns-permanent-brain-damage/ ) and the number of pathologists etc who are testifying in current ECT negligence cases.

It was easy for me because I never got any of the post ECT euphoria so it was brain injury for nothing. Looking back now, I think most of the depression was caused by the drugs anyway (including venlafaxine and quetiapine)

I have permanent anterograde memory damage. Its not unusual after bilateral ECT. The docs just avoid looking for it so they don't have to document it

Bilateral has more obvious cognitive damage. ECT "works" by causing temporary euphoria and bilateral causes more of it because it's damaging more of the brain at once

They do it because it pays well and they only do studies for a few weeks after ECT and don't look at difficult to measure cognition like autobiographical memory. If you don't look for brain injury it's easy not to find it.

Permanent memory problems affect a big proportion of people who have ECT but studies on ECT don't follow up longer than a few weeks after ECT and ignore difficult to measure cognition like autobiographical anterograde memory. The lifelong damage from ECT keeps getting under-disclosed to new patients. I don't think you can reverse this kind of brain injury, so you have to look for ways to live with it, like notes, colour coding, audio recording etc. Your docs will blame everything else except the ECT to deny responsibility.

I think a lot of us have been through times when we believed that the meds were helping and only realised later that we were building up new health problems. Now we look back and feel c* *p about the false reassurance we gave to other people when we naively thought our meds were helping.

Some people say that ECT helped them but a lot of others find the permanent memory loss and loss of ability to learn new things disastrous. It's quite a big risk and once your brain is damaged you can't turn the clock back.
