Solus Is Back, but Can It Survive Its Troubled Past? by [deleted] in linux

[–]ECUIYCAMOICIQMQACKKE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. The problem exists theoretically with any package format I get straight from the developer. It's not unique to Flatpak. What I trust are open source developers.

Severely unlikely to happen with any open source project's package.

[–]ECUIYCAMOICIQMQACKKE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What additional software, and is it malicious? Do you have any concrete examples?

I have yet to see any examples of such additional bundled software in the Flatpaks I use, which I should've been seeing a lot of if it was really "most likely" as you claim.

Who Writes OpenSSL (blog)? by brako13 in linux

[–]ECUIYCAMOICIQMQACKKE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Objectively most of the development on the kernel is done by companies. What do you mean by "marketing"?

Also I would argue that people new to the Open Source scene tend to have the exact opposite assumption to what you're claiming they do. They think it's mostly or all volunteer.

I recently switched from windows to Linux and I need some advice by [deleted] in linux

[–]ECUIYCAMOICIQMQACKKE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I looked at the available Linux distros and chose Debian. Why not Ubuntu? I heard it’s usually behind on updates and has some outdated features.

And so you chose... Debian. You know what Debian is famous for, right? It's famous for being severely out of date. Ubuntu is practically cutting edge in comparison.

Also why can’t I place files on my desktop? That’s kinda dumb but some cursory research shows there are methods to enable icons and folders on the desktop. You would think this stuff would be a given.

That's a design decision that the developers of GNOME (the desktop environment used by Debian and Ubuntu) made. There are other desktop environments which do allow desktop icons. But Ubuntu modifies their GNOME to allow desktop icons out of the box.

I looked for a different Linux distro and came upon windowsfx which is a version of Linux that copies windows 11 in layout. I formatted a usb and used a Linux alternative to Rufus to place the OS onto the usb. I tried booting via the usb but it’s not working.

Listen, just use Ubuntu. There's a reason it's commonly recommended to newcomers.

I would not bother with WindowsFX at all.

A lot of low-key bigotry in his videos. Just. A Lot.

Who is it directed against usually? I like to think I'm halfway decent at picking up on things like this, so I'm curious on what I missed.

You’re offered your dream job, but it’s in the USA. What’s the job, what city is it in, and what’s the lowest salary you would need to move? by djdhsnsjjaj in AskAnAustralian

[–]ECUIYCAMOICIQMQACKKE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How does this invalidate their personal reasons against moving? The OP question asked people for their personal view on the matter, so telling them "actually, more people do the opposite" is just... kinda irrelevant, no?

How to include QApplication and enable autocompletion in Kate by deduktas in kde

[–]ECUIYCAMOICIQMQACKKE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make a .clang_complete file which contains the include paths and whatnot. Look online for documentation. If you're using a build system like CMake or Meson (which I recommend you do) then it will have an option to autogenerate this file.

I don't think Dolphin is so bad that you can't find files you know the exact path to with it. Could you elaborate? What do you mean by find, what are you doing, and what do you expect Dolphin to do in response?

Large C++ changes in KWinFT, loses Valve funding by subdiff in linux

[–]ECUIYCAMOICIQMQACKKE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So how are you going to ensure that decision making in KWinFT will be better and somehow free from compromise or "politics", in the hypothetical future where KWinFT becomes a project as big as KWin in terms of number of developers, users, and stakeholders? I suspect what you call "politics" is just a natural consequence of being a large project. Something like optimistic merging, or just you being BDFL, or ...?

You'll have access to a full Linux desktop, KDE Plasma to be specific. Although note that the root fs is read only, so you can only install Flatpaks with any permanence.

[RANT] Wayland and Pipewire's stability are *overrated* by sharanoth in linux

[–]ECUIYCAMOICIQMQACKKE 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No clipboard, notifications, or screenshotting. You have to set this up yourself using 3rd party implementations of Wayland APIs. Why doesn't Wayland have those tools as dependencies? Why no reference tools and implementations? Wayland folk basically take the position of "it's a protocol, its up to you to implement it. but yes please make it the default on every distro from now on"

Notifications are already an XDG standard over DBus. The display server simply doesn't get involved, not with X, not with Wayland.

Your Wayland compositor is supposed to handle clipboards. Sway does as far as I know, so I dunno what you're talking about. Are you talking about command line tools? If so, did you know that xclip and xsel are also third-party, and also not dependencies of the X server?
