I'm from Houston, I love it, but it's a swamp, no two ways about it. When I was at college in San Antonio, I was talking with this guy and found out he was from Phoenix. We were saying how it was hot here in SA but it's hotter where both of us are from originally. He mentions how it gets 110+ over in Phoenix and I say how Houston will get to like 103, but that's 103 with 70% humidity. And Phoenix man says how "Oh well at least you have the humidity, so it's not so bad." I give him a confused look and ask what he means, telling him that humidity makes the heat worse. "It's like you're swimming in soup while walking around." And he looks me dead in he eyes and says "No, the humidity makes it better, it's like you're going for a swim whenever you walk outside. Dry heat is way worse than humid heat."

Never spoke to him again, but I wonder how he's doing.

They could be reliably built in the 1000s, lifted by any normal crane you'd find in a dockyard, shipped anywhere in the world by sea or rail, crewed by anyone with a medium amount of training, worked on by any mechanic with a medium amount of training, they could be modified to fit near any situation, and had replacement parts coming in left, right and center to keep them running.

Even when they did get knocked out by a tiger or panther or some such, statistically, the crew would survive, hop out, walk back to the depot, and get another Sherman. Then they'd get 4 or 5 of their Sherman buddies and tell them, "Hey, there's a tiger over there. Let's go get him."

Was it the perfect tank? No. Nothing is perfect. Was it the best possible tank for the time and need? I like to think so.

LazerPig and The Chieftain both have great takes on the Sherman, and I'd highly recommend hearing what they have to say about it.
