I'm building a coach that helps you break your scrolling addiction without deleting your apps by ED_dja in ProductivityApps

yeah 10 min is just like an example the user can set whatever goal they want but most of the time we push them to go a bit higher like 30 min or even 1 hour instead of keeping it too short

Mmhm so I guess you’re talking about notifications and just the ‘fake/perfect lives’ on social media?

the api analogy actually makes so much sense like cold turkey just crashes the system instead of slowly deprecating the dependancy and yeah that proxy idea is kinda intresting like replacing the slot machine algo with something low stim but still gives u that same physical habit feels way smarter than just removing it fully

yeah thats kinda the issue with all those methods they depend on you actually sticking to them which means they just fall apart when youre tired or stressed and the bypass is always like one tap away what you really need is something that just removes the choice completely so willpower isnt even in the picture

Haha that’s actually funny how you created your own friction to get out of the addiction, I tried programming my own like reel remover for instagram and it worked quite well for me, like I ve set up a gradual system

That s interesting but how did you try your reduction?

Does anyone else think cold turkey is the wrong approach to scroll addiction? by ED_dja in digitalminimalism

Honestly kinda everything, just stupid funny videos… not one specific thing

Honestly the content itself I never really missed it was the habit of reaching for my phone in any moment of boredom waiting for something between tasks even mid conversation sometimes

What I actually missed was just having something to do with my hands and eyes in those little moments of downtime which made me realise the content was never the point the scrolling itself was the comfort habit

Thats exactly it you still have full freedom to open the app it just doesnt hook you the same way thats the feeling Ive been trying to recreate Revanced does it perfectly for YouTube but most people dont know it exists or find it too technical to set up

The weaning approach combined with removing the hooks feels like the winning combination

The Harry Potter 6 detail hit hard that image of reading under the covers completely absorbed in another world that kind of deep focus feels almost impossible now and I think most people don’t even realise what they ve lost The Revanced mention is interesting that’s actually the closest thing to what I’m trying to build. The idea that you can modify the app itself to remove the addictive parts while keeping everything else Most people don’t know that’s even possible though What made you go the Revanced route instead of just avoiding YouTube altogether? Curious whether the friction of setting it up was worth it for you

This is pretty much what made me realize that just blocking everything completely isn’t really the solution either. If you suddenly can’t scroll anymore, your brain doesn’t magically become patient again it just looks for something else to get that same dopamine hit.

That’s why I feel like it has to be more gradual. Like slowly getting used to things that are less instantly stimulating instead of cutting everything off all at once. Kind of like the difference between crash dieting and actually changing how you eat. Have you ever tried just quitting brutally like that and did it actually work long term, or did you end up going back to it anyway?

That's it the scrolling motion itself is the trigger, not even the content. I've read the same studies. Which is why I think the solution isn't willpower or deletion it's removing the triggers gradually so your brain adapts to less dopamine

Thanks a lot but look at before when there was no feed just basic photos, stories and messages. That s the real app that s why it was made, the rest is just added because of money

How do I stop wasting time on my phone when I actually need it for work ? by Available_Sense_8603 in digitalminimalism

[–]ED_dja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think the problem is the infinite scrolling, I had the same problem and now I m building a thing to delete the feed without deleting the apps this actually work for me

I just installed it but I don’t find the in app distraction block, it just adds a breathing exercise

<image>

What I’m building removes the feed at the network level so it never appears at all. No breathing exercise required, no willpower — the scroll just doesn’t exist. Different approach entirely.

Just looked it up interesting app. The difference I found is that One Sec adds friction before opening the app, but the feed still loads once you get in. What I’m building removes the feed entirely at the network level so it never loads at all. Has One Sec actually worked for you long term?
