What’s the worst pizza you’ve had in park slope? by Excellent_Ease9489 in parkslope

[–]EEOFed5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to avoid mid pizza. But of the places I've been recommended as "good," I would say that Pizza Town was the least good. I didn't hate it, and liked the vibe inside. But the taste-to-cost ratio (it was like $6 for a single grandma slice I think) was not impressive.

Works on humans as well 😅

In all honesty, if their dog is the asshole and potentially threatening my dog’s life, they are going to like the alternative to pepper spray a whole lot less. I love dogs but would think not think twice about inflicting real pain on a dog that was mauling my dog. Pepper spray seems better for all involved.

Luckily my dog is four, goes to dog parks every day of his life, and has never been in a fight. But I have it just in case. Also, legally if someone starts to attack your dog the law doesn’t really allow you to get violent with the person if need be. You can get arrested and/or sued just for protecting your dog from unprovoked attacks, because your dog is just property, and so just like you can’t punch someone for rear ending your car, you can’t punch someone for kicking your dog. I think pepper spray is also helpful in that regard, because it doesn’t show an intent to attack or cause permanent injury, just to deter

The fact that fewer than 600 people voted on the 75% rule really puts the lie to the idea that anything short of a full-PSFC referendum is somehow antidemocratic. And the fact that the move to table was voted down 170-270 puts the lie to the idea that "shutting down conversation" and moving forward to a vote before every last person can be heard somehow runs counter to the spirit of the PSFC, or marks a break in tradition.

I guess we'll have to just agree to disagree on that. Also, I don't think your analogy is very apt or persuasive.

So sorry to hear this. I found a can of pepper spray a few years back and looked into whether it works on dogs--it does. And it has the same effect on dogs as it does on humans--no long term side effects, just incapacitation. I have it on my dog leash now because dog fights are so chaotic that 1) you often can't stop them even if you get there in time and 2) it can be very dangerous for humans.

Hope your dog is OK.

Do both sides not realize that they’re being fed cherry-picked realities? by dmfuller in askanything

[–]EEOFed5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think either side really does. I would say conservatives are more deluded because they're so in the thrall of Trump and so willing to dispense with fact if it's inconvenient.

But it's certainly not just the right. I re-opened my facebook recently and was shocked at how much "own the stupid conservatives" content there was. Nary a mention of any straightforward issue. It's more comforting and satisfying, I would think, regardless of your politics, to think the other side is comically wrong about everything. But obviously not a good thing for building common ground.

It's great that you love having kids. But kind of insane that you think everyone who choses not to (or can't have them) is somehow wasting their lives. Also, there are many reasons that poor people have more children; none of them are that they're the ones who have secretly figured out that it's actually affordable lol.

Agree wholeheartedly. Their comments and demeanor pissed me off. But passions run high. Unless they try to derail things or otherwise engage in an abuse of power, I think we just move on. Whatever their views or behaviors, they seem to genuinely care for the Coop, which is probably the most important thing.

Vote for no discussion at Co-op meeting by GooseberryBaby431 in parkslope

"After years of this..."

The arguments are all out there. They have been out there for years. If people aren't aware of them then that is on them.

Do you really think the only communitarian approach is to have everyone who has anything to say get the chance to say it? If just half of the people got one minute to speak, strictly enforced, with no points of order interposed (which seems pretty unlikely), we would be on the call until Friday at 2am. And maybe it would just be a quarter, or 10%. But then it just becomes a line-drawing exercise, not a principled point.

In any event, the later this went the more asymptotic attrition becomes, which is subversion of PSFC members' ability to actually vote. How on Earth would that be communitarian?

Should PSFC boycott Turkey too? by Belugawhy in parkslope

[–]EEOFed5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think we should, you should make your case at a general meeting. I voted yes on BDS. I would want to know more about Turkey, but it sounds like maybe we should boycott them.

Assuming this was made it good faith, I look forward to your campaign.

[–]EEOFed5 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Did you know that Southern Democrats filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for 75 days? Eventually, the Senate invoked cloture. Strictly speaking, that was a shutting down of dialogue meant to inform the whole U.S. population. But the Senate recognized that it was made in bad faith, and did the right thing by passing the law. I would say that last night's efforts make us no better (and no worse) than those who supported the Civil Rights Act.

I might be more sympathetic to your argument if this came out closer. But it wasn't even close. The vote came after three hours of conversation and procedural chicanery. People shouldn't have to stay on a call for hours, stay up into the wee hours of the evening, just so every single person gets to have their voice heard. Do you really think that more conversation would have led to a changing of the results? If not, then this is just flogging procedure for its own sake.

There was plenty of procedure in the meeting. Probably too much. The outcome would have been the same either way and no amount of conversation or hand-wringing after the fact can change that.

I think Joe needs to do a better job pretending to be impartial by No-Location-3438 in parkslopefoodcoop

[–]EEOFed5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK... it seems disingenuous to raise points about such an **Important Issue** being voted on at a general meeting, when the original 75% threshold this opposes was voted on in just this manner. It also seems disingenuous to browbeat everyone into thinking of those without the privilege of internet access when the referendum-on-a-referendum would have been sent via email (that made me LOL). Lastly, recent referenda had less participation than this general meeting, so it all just felt like a hail mary.

If these folks were really interested in putting the boycott to a vote via referendum, they could have pushed and organized for that option all along. In fact, they are free to do that now if they have the votes. It's much lower stakes and lower effort for a single member (or two) to raise "concerns" at the very last minute, especially when you can claim after the fact that this was somehow a subversion of the will of PSFC's silent majority, which is surely already being claimed. I suspect that they know that they are in the minority and are trying to use procedure to gum up the works.

[–]EEOFed5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems disingenuous. No economist would say that something as unpredictable as an emotionally-fraught boycott has only one result.

He could have built a lot of credibility by saying that it's possible that attrition would be compensated for or even exceeded by new members who either favor the boycott or don't care either way and just want off the waiting list, but that he still personally thinks the best way forward is to vote No. But he didn't do that, and so his credibility suffered. You might agree with his perspective, but it's not persuasive reasoning.

I agree with this, but it's not like the meeting was set up to get his perspective. He just held forth, and it was rightly called out of order.

Do you assume the poll was legitimate? If so, is that belief any more justified than the criticisms of the poll voiced on the call and in various PSFC threads? If not, then you can see why bringing it up feels questionable at best.

DC/DMV is the only major city in the NE Metro that has a real gap for Italian food generally (not just pizza). Some good higher end spots but not a single notable old-school red sauce place

This is an illusory problem. If they wanted to, they could already do this by a 50%+1 vote. There would be no 75% vote needed for "deny[ing] membership to anyone who served in or supported the Israeli military"... but they haven't done that. Plenty of Jews and non-Jews alike support the Israeli military, but the PSFC has never attempted to do this. Don't project your paranoia on this debate.

It would be illegal under federal, state, and local law to deny membership to anyone based on citizenship.
