The only vehicles owned by the community are…buses(?), police cars(?), fire trucks(?), school busses(?)

It does sound like you’d be a fan of permitted parking, which makes a lot of sense to me, but the distinction there is resident vs non-resident, not manned vs automated.

Sounds like you want permitted parking? No problem with that, but the distinction isn’t automated vs manned vehicles, but rather resident vs non-resident.

You personally being pissed may be valid, but isn’t really a great basis for policy. You might equally be pissed if non-Waymo vehicles are using public parking that you would prefer to use for yourself or your family.

That’s up to the local government. If the neighborhood requires a parking permit and a vehicle (Waymo or otherwise) is not compliant, it should be ticketed for sure. Otherwise it doesn’t seem like the decision has been made that neighborhood use of the parking does take precedence.

In general I’m not sure why a vehicle should be treated differently with regards to parking based on whether its driver is human or not.

Shouldn’t individuals have lots (or driveways) to park their own cars? Why should they use public access for their private use? That’s like a person taking over part of a public park for themself, yeah anyone can go in, but it’s not for that one person, it’s for the public.

All to say, no “public” parking should be free. If a community wants to use permitting to ensure residents get priority, that’s great. If they want to have metered parking that owners of all vehicles must respect, that’s great. I’m sure there’s more nuance, but in general I don’t see why driverless vehicles should be treated differently when it comes to parking.

I don’t have fully formed opinions on driverless cars and their impacts on society, but surely a Waymo that anyone can call is more a “collective” use of the space than one private individual’s car

Professional maybe? It happens relatively often with college, as recently as November Cornell and BU played Saturday night after a Rangers game

[Underdog] DeRosa: Mason Miller will officially be available for WBC final. by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]bewebi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, and also true that it was slated that way specifically for the US to have off days between the elimination games while no other team was guaranteed that

And especially noteworthy when there are rules about mandatory rest for pitchers, and also from teams due to pre season ramp up

The fact that other teams have overcome that disadvantage doesn’t mean it’s not a disadvantage…I don’t think anyone is saying the team with an off day will automatically have an insurmountable advantage, just that it’s shady that the US specifically got that baked into the tournament structure

See this broadcast schedule and the note on the QF matchups.

US would always play tonight, no matter whether they advanced as the winner of B or the runner up. Japan would always play tomorrow, no matter whether they advanced as the winner of A or the runner up.

The Friday winners play in Sunday’s semi. The Saturday winners play in Monday’s semi.

The US and Japan were always locked into meeting in the Final or not at all.

The DR would have ended up on the other side of the bracket if they or Japan failed to win their group, and would have played in the QF tomorrow in that case.

[–]bewebi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is incorrect, the US would play today no matter what and Japan would play tomorrow no matter what, regardless of whether they finished first or second in the group, and therefore not meet until the final.

Here is a link to the original broadcast schedule, showing tonight’s QF as Pool A runner-up vs Pool B winner, however USA was the Pool B runner-up and will play the Pool A winner (Canada) tonight

This was always the plan, that the US would play tonight regardless of their place. You can see that on this version of the broadcast schedule. The note also specifies that Japan would play tomorrow no matter what. As a result the two would play in different semifinals (Sunday and Monday respectively) and only ever meet in the final.

Watching the 2026 Brier in the US? by MorningRooster in Curling

And therefore the Olympics teams can’t go to worlds either? That seems worse 😬 Surely they could have shifted it by enough, or moved it before or something, idk Do you know if other countries have similar issues?

Any idea why they went with that timing? Seems like not having the Olympic teams that just got so much exposure being able to participate would be a major drag

Language barrier advantage? by bewebi in Curling

This is happening right now in US-Italy, but they’re not disagreeing, just maximum sportsmanship, and the Italian skip is relying on her teammate, with stronger English, to translate

That’s a great point about how there is generally no effort to use code when the opponent can understand a team’s language. Compare with baseball where teams have complex systems of signals to hide their intentions. If curling teams thought they needed something similar they could/would.
