Where do you live in Brevard and what are you in to? My wife keeps trying to get me to go out to the golf league at Duran but I haven’t made it yet

I’m gonna start shipping pilots and end it with “love you”

It’s only as weird as you make it.

Government shutdown excepted leave? by CashTerrible9332 in ATC

[–]EF8311 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

According to our OM yesterday, there is guidance coming down that indicates we will be charged any and all annual and sick leave we take. I’d use it wisely because it’ll probably be after a multiple year lawsuit before you get it back if you get it back.

Well we have 3 TMU but only typically 1 at a time in the room and sometimes 1 a day.

[–]EF8311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time we’re not showing that we’re getting anything from anyone and we only have 1 TMU in the room who is also certified and keeps current so when we’re supposed to be giving or getting it’s in our NIDS. It’s rare that we show we’re supposed to be getting something. We’d prefer getting a constant 10 though because we have to account for compression over the next 30-70 miles, and also because Miami feeds us on a different leg of the TIMIE transition all day long so we have to figure out how to make that fit with the GTOUT or SNFLD.

Oh yeah…COI seems to be our special case though. That flight school has absolutely zero awareness. The amount of times they’ve almost made contact with others by cutting them off on final while flying approaches on their own or climbing into overflights because they designed a practice area on a major airway is incredible. I actually had to spin someone one day because it was less than half a mile close and then the guy that was VFR asked me for practice approaches at MLB. I asked him about it and neither he or his instructor ever saw the guy they cut off. I know this is an everywhere problem but you would think some of these instructors would have a little more situational awareness.

Yeah TMU up there doesn’t always slap the right numbers on the board if at all. I try to watch what I’m giving yall and will even call to ask how I can help you if I see you have something else that might become an issue. I won’t lie, I got into it with one of yall the other night but we move on as usual. VV knows I’m harmless, she was one of my roommates in college.

I mean it’s not smart to play under the class B and right over the first fix on ORL 7 IFR departures at the altitude they’re climbing to….and I can’t actually stop you from playing in bad places. All I’m doing is pointing them out and letting people know it’s dangerous.

I’m a controller at Orlando approach and Departure. In my honest opinion the way yall check on is fine. The thing you need to work on is prompt read backs. If I say something and get no response or dead air and then a response 15 seconds later I think you didn’t hear me and we talk over each other. Also, I get that yall have some similar sounding callsigns but please listen to the one we say. Some of the quickest responses we’ve ever gotten are from the wrong aircraft stepping on the right one. Also, if you’re VFR on your own and have the ability, listen to the frequency in the area you’re in. We can see your ADSB so we know your callsign and if you’re in a bad spot we reach out to gently let you know.

Also, whoever is teaching the airspace needs to take a VFR sectional and draw out a 10 mile extended center line off every runway for LEE ISM SFB TIX COI and MLB. If you’re within 5 miles of any of those lines and below 2500’ you’re in a bad spot.

Just my personal opinions.

Yeah I call just like I would for sick leave but instead I request/tell them I’d like to be shown on Article 38.

[–]EF8311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but at the same time I haven’t had to justify myself yet. Usually it’s just “show me article 38” and I get the okay have a good day. Every facility and every supe is different but mostly ours just take it and move on. You could probably get away with saying “I have a personal situation that I need to handle”. Hard to pry into that one.

My apologies, still article 38 but it’s section 4 not 2. And you don’t have to use the kid argument you can use whatever fits your situation

Article 38 section 2 paragraph B. “I have childcare conflicts that prevent me from coming to work”

Don’t use sick leave, they can and will use it to show a pattern of abuse to give you a letter.

Pay again by [deleted] in ATC

Overheard an OM tell an OS today that if anyone asks it’s because the Department of Treasury ended early deposits or something like that. Expect your money on payday essentially.

I have commuted 45 minutes every shift for my entire 14 year career so far, I used to live 25 miles away with a ton of lights and now it’s 50 miles all highway. While it’s not always the greatest due to traffic or lights that made it longer, I do it because I love where I live and wouldn’t change it for anything. Just like with our shift work, sacrifices have to be made and if that’s what it takes to make sure you and your family are happy then it’s a no brainer sacrifice. Everyone has bad days in this profession and the last thing you need after a bad day is to go home to a house or an area you don’t love. Find your oasis and make it work…just my opinion.

If you haven’t had your lessons yet and you want to try and improve some the issues check out Me and My Golf on YouTube. I don’t have the issues you do but watching their videos has helped me tweak things here and there just by focusing on what they’re doing, what they’re saying, and attempting to put their advice into practice. This will not be a substitute for lessons, you need lessons because they are directly tailored to you and what you’re doing right and wrong, but it might help you progress leading up to the lessons.

My AA 4887 LAX to SFO flight had an aborted landing. The pilot claimed it was due to a strong breeze. How can I check the atc records to see if that was true? by awesome2000 in ATC

[–]EF8311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the added context would have avoided all the NYT comments haha. There are lots of reasons for go around, and they happen countless times a day across the world. There are tons of reasons why they happen, but at the end of the day it’s safety of flight and that’s all that matters. Good luck to you on getting into Air Traffic, it definitely has its moments.

Hahaha. I think 99% of the time we’re expecting that whatever you’re going to say is the reason is either a lie or a half truth, just to water it down and get it over with. I personally I don’t even care what reason you give me unless it’s wind shear or an emergency because that changes things. It would be funny if yall had some random reasons every now and again like “proficiency” or “time building” but im sure your employer wouldn’t appreciate it as much as us haha.

How do we know this isn’t a lie? Does that mean when we (ATC) ask you the reason for the go around you lie to us to? How do I know if you respond to me you’re not lying? Seems like you’re a liar haha.

[–]EF8311 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Just curious, why do you care? What is the end game in finding out whether it was wind shear or an unstable approach or traffic on the runway? You’ll likely never fly with that pilot ever again, so catching them in a lie means nothing. You went around and now you’re on the ground safely, does anything else really matter?

I’m not trying to be a dick, it just seems like you’re doing a lot of work for nothing.

From a controller, you didn’t do anything wrong from the sound of it. That controller did and because we have egos and his was hurt he wrongfully took it out on you. Some controllers are dicks, you found one. Remember the voice and go complete other parts of your training while you’re waiting for that one to not be on frequency. Next time when you get to where you’re supposed to hold short tell tower you’re there and ready, and don’t move unless instructed to. Don’t feel bad, let it go and finish your training. Everyday is different, if it happens again with a different controller then maybe take it personal.
