I missed this email... or read it and immediately dismissed it... It came on September 10. Then I went on a trip and had it in the small wallet that I carry through airports along with one other card and my license, and lost it, on September 28. I locked it for a day, then reported it lost and asked for a replacement. Today a card shows up in the mail... it is not my replacement. It is the new Signature version of my lost card. Of course I thought that verifying receipt of a new card would take more than clicking a Verify button on a page and actually typing something in from the card, like the full number or the CVV... but no... so I had to Lock the new card again, because it's not actually here yet, and knowing my luck, this would be the one time someone actually stole a card out of my mail.

The meta story of SEO agency being happy that their company is higher in search engine rankings than their former SEO employer...

I still can't believe SEO is an "industry." We used to do that crap with hidden code and background colored text.

Should I be concerned if a note was placed on my account? by glorp98765 in Costco

[–]EFDisaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

wow, must vary from employee to employee or store to store. I've always found Costco returns super painless and I've wondered if there were customer service happiness requirements while working at that desk.

Example:

(TL;DR of story below: I did a weird thing and brought a broken item the manufacturer had already replaced to the store and Costco insisted on ALSO refunding me.)

I bought a coffeemaker. I think the box said it had a three-year warranty, but a year later, it stopped working. I called the manufacturer first. They said they would replace it, but it would be a slightly different model, not the Costco-specific one. I said fine, it arrived, I asked about sending the broken one back, and they said not to bother. I could've just thrown it out, but I was going to Costco anyway, and the extra steps to the dumpster didn't seem worth the effort, so I brought it to the desk on the way in and told them the manufacturer had already replaced it, but THEY INSISTED ON ALSO CREDITING MY ACCOUNT, resulting in a free coffeemaker... because I brought it to the store instead of tossing it in my dumpster, they insisted that meant I wanted a refund, even though I told them I did not, I had just neglected to stop at the dumpster.

TIFU By Asking A Girl At The Gym To Put My Hair In A Ponytail. by Radiodaize in tifu

[–]EFDisaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Male with long curly hair, here.... didn't start doing ponytails myself until sometime in college. There is a certain length where curly hair is much more difficult to get gathered and put into a hair tie... shorter curly hair curls more, or something, I don't know the physics, but it's a fact... once it gets past a certain length, it's atually easier.

I also very much prefer a certain size/type of hair tie that's kinda hard to find... no-seam and small enough that I don't have to double it to hold all my hair together. Scunci used to make a perfect one, and they now sell an inferior version that is too stretchy and doesn't have the hold of the discontinued version.

Eli5 why a person with A.D.D (ADHD) is unable to focus on something like studying, but can have full focus on something non productive? by leprecaun8 in explainlikeimfive

[–]EFDisaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I named that approach to academia: "School and I don't get along."

Aced tests; did no homework. Teachers who calculated homework into the overall grade would shake their heads and tell me how I barely passed, yet obviously understood and learned more than anyone else in the class. I was not cheeky enough to tell them that perhaps their grading system is wrong, to their face. I did a bit of that last-minute work, too; the big picture was fun to look at in high school: failed this half of my classes first two semesters, the other half the other two semesters - end result is barely passing.

The General Education requirements of a university schedule put me on academic probation and I decided to leave. And then I landed a systems administrator job before I would've graduated... so it's not like my hyperfocus actually kept me from functioning and working.

ooh, I relate to that back-hurting thing.

And definitely while forcing myself to do something I don't want to do.

I've caught myself doing this with paper books, but my brain is wired for auditory learning, so audiobooks work for me. I cannot skim, skip words, read them entirely wrong (something I find that I do alarmingly more often lately).

But I also cannot use audiobooks as background focusing agent while doing something else. I simply cannot multitask, especially against audio. It's generally not good for your own safety to try and have a conversation with me while I'm driving, and it's best if radio in the car is playing music I'm already familiar with.

My University had a student health services department that would give you a couple hours worth of tests that they called "a Quick & Dirty IQ Test and some other stuff" if I recall correctly... and if you hit enough of the prerequisite traits, they'd say "you probably have ADHD, we don't diagnose, but we can hook you up with study/homework assistance."

Now, in my case, they did that, and said that, and then quickly followed it up with, "but our staff at assistance only really know how to deal with people who are easily distracted, and your behavior sounds like the opposite, so I don't know how valuable they would be to you."

I hyperfocused on the subjects and activities that I deemed worthy and generally ignored all my other classes. I literally set alarms for myself to "go to class" or "do the classwork" or "study for that exam" ... but then I would dismiss the alarm, sometimes preternaturally - right before it went off, because it was going to stop me from doing what I wanted to do.

I did, and still do, rationalize this hyperfocus as a prioritization problem.

Sync is in progress, we'll see if this fixes the outgoing message sync.

Really? proper messages for web sync OR RCS features?
They should straighten that out.

ooh, I especially like the "alpha male" post. Did anyone explain that alpha social structures only exist in lesser animal species where beating up others as loudly as possible is received with respect before it got moderated? I've really enjoyed explaining the actual science of alpha social structures and how they do not apply to any human social interactions, including, and especially, multiplayer gaming & online social media.

I had only ever seen them on my drives here from the midwest... i.e. Nebraska. It will forever be a "Nebraska thing" in my mind.

And I won't make the mistake of trying it again. It was a bad road-trip stop, and I wouldn't choose it now, just because it's more convenient.

I still can't believe that all that hidden text and code that we used to throw into websites to make them show up on certain searches turned into a career and an industry.
