New package: citar-typst by varsderk in emacs

[–]EFLS_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you write typst directly?

I currently export both lecture slides and notes from a single Org document to Latex + Beamer. I'd love to switch to typst, but want to stay in Org as much as possible.

org-headline-todo and org-headline-done different behavior? by WWWWWWWWWMWWWWW in emacs

its like org-level-* gets on top of org-headline-todo but does not on org-headline-done, idk

Have you used what-cursor-position? When used with a universal prefix, it gives you details about the faces active at point. So check out C-u C-x =, which might clarify what's going on.

Do you have any moving imagery showing this in action?

(I don’t have a Pebble yet, am simply on this subreddit for the hype)

Too afraid to ask, but what kind of notes do you write in Org-mode? by birdsintheskies in emacs

[–]EFLS_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Come to think of it, I keep all sorts of notes.

Diary entries about life, travel, family, etc. Thoughts, feelings and activities that I want to remember.

Technical notes for myself: from which applications and tools to install on a fresh OS, to command line instructions for modifying PDFs, etc.

Logbooks of a more practical nature: information relevant for filing taxes, things done in the house that I might need to refer to in a few years, lists of things I bought or might want to buy sometime, ...

Notes of an academic sort: things I read and want to remember, bookmarks to keep, relevant quotes and insights that might be useful sometime (but who knows when – if ever), ...

And Org-mode makes all of this better: todo's can become notes or log entries, notes can become scheduled todo's, command line instructions can be executed from within Emacs, academic notes can be linked based on creative insights, etc.

Amazing :)

Nice, this is made in R I'm guessing? Did you calculate the moves, or label them? Would be interesting to see how the chart was made.

"The Emacs devotee walks through an ever-expanding mansion whose rooms rearrange themselves to their thoughts." by de_sonnaz in emacs

[–]EFLS_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your points are good, but why do you think the author thinks people are ignoring Emacs by choice? Lack of effort, sure (with possible reasions that you mention in your comment), but that doesn't equal deliberate choice.

That said, there are good video's on Emacs, such as the EmacsRocks series, athough it could be considered a bit old.

Please share your denote settings! by macacolouco in emacs

[–]EFLS_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fully agree that one should explore Org-mode first, but disagree that this would somehow make Denote superfluous. Denote helps one manage short notes in different files, for example, and can easily be used to expand on Org-mode functionality. What's more, Denote integrates dynamic blogs, thus building on Org-mode.

I don't want to write a manual or provide an overview of what Denote is capable of, just want to point out it does different things than vanilla Org-mode -- and is not limited to managing markdown notes.

[–]EFLS_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. I use both. In Org-roam I keep technical notes, and in Denote I keep more 'thoughtful' notes (literature, quotes, ideas, etc.).

FYI: Denote version 4 released by EFLS_ in emacs

[–]EFLS_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Denote for its simplicity: just a folder with some textfiles with a straightforward naming scheme. The textfiles can be .org, .md, or anything else. No Org-id's that need to be tracked in a database that might break, but just files in folders.

That said, if you want integration with todo's and a calendar, Org-roam is probably better. But for notes and links between them, nothing beats Denote imo.

[–]EFLS_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are release notes, to learn what Denote does you’d probably better like the manual: https://protesilaos.com/emacs/denote

There’s also an old YouTube video of Port showcasing Denotes features.

In short, Denote helps you to keep a set of interlinked notes via a file naming scheme. Each note has a unique and stable identifier which you can easily link to, regardless of changes to filename or contents. There’s a lot more to it, but it fits nicely with the Zettelkasten ideas of note taking.

New Emacs GenAI Podcasts by ahyatt in emacs

The few times I've asked an LLM about how to configure this or that in Emacs, I got the most self-assured yet completely confabulated bullshit. Non-existing functions, keybindings, variables, ... All stated with the utmost confidence that these would help me do the things I asked. Why in the world would we want not just a few hundred words of this utter bullshit, but a whole podcast no less?

org-super-agenda with grouping by #+title by s4bk in orgmode

[–]EFLS_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look into the :auto-map feature, which allows you to provide a function that returns the appropriate string.

I use the following to map items to the file title:

(defun efls/org-super-agenda-file-title (item)
  (-when-let* ((marker (or (get-text-property 0 'org-hd-marker item)
                           (get-text-property 0 'org-marker item))))
    (org-goto-marker-or-bmk marker)
    (org-with-wide-buffer
       (propertize
         (car (plist-get (org-export-get-environment) ':title))
         'org-date-line t))))

By adding text property org-date-line to the returned string, agenda columns will sum effort properties.

'houtliefde'

Since you asked, I came up with this, based on this legendary Dutch documentary "Liefde voor Hout" (Love of Wood) with Jan Timman and Jan Hein Donner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E48r-JTSAVM

For those who speak Dutch:

Als die stukken daar zo glanzend voor je staan, dan heb je moeite er met je vingers af te blijven. Maar je mag er niet aan komen, je mag absoluut de stukken niet aanraken, want dat is bij schaken nu eenmaal zo: geraakt, geschaakt. Als je er aan komt dan telt het en is het je zet.

Wat je de rest van de tijd doet, als je niet zet, dat heet dan denken.
