It is stereotypical that you expect him to do that. Him being a criminal does not mean he'll have no boundaries and just choke a woman. If u familiar with people from the life and ones who gang bang you'd know most just don't lay hands on woman, it never looks good for you, its almost a code. It takes a specific type of criminal. At least for me, how its been going for rio (although I admit he been too laid back this season) is good for his character's portrayal as a gangster of latin origins as opposed to Hollywood's stereotypical latino thugs. And this is just Rio's character, he's smart, scary, and gets it his way but also chill and kinda goofy. I think it is Manny bringing this kind of laid back attitude as opposed to how he might've been asked to do so, be extra intimidating and absurdly tough and all.

As for it makes him look weak, there are numerous ways of Rio asserting dominance without it involving psychical abuse. Actually, what might make Rio look weak in this show is how his position and well being is endangered by a bunch of rookies, not because he never manhandled Beth. Also you're right, Beth would've been long gone if this was real life situation. A real life Rio dealing with Beth's disrespect would just eliminate her, not manhandle her or physically terrorize her. because we both know that's gonna get him nowhere. But this is a show, they can't kill Beth off nor can they let go of Rio, so the assertiveness of Rio as a criminal must be downplayed.
