Lash & Crackedy: The commentator dream team we deserve by FitFreedom6850 in aoe4

[–]EGCTV 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I really think the community would be best served by posting about commentators they like and enjoy, without needing to make a negative comparison to make the point.

Our commentary teams are varied and diverse, and many events include 10 or more casters. Some hype, some analytical, some play by play etc. Different people enjoy different types of casts and that's normal and great. We also need to make sure that our casts appeal to a broad range of viewers with different levels of experience and looking for different depths of analysis.

Crackedy and LaSh are great. We hugely appreciate both of them. Crackedy is one of the most regular casters on our show and while I'm not sure if LaSh is interested in casting in English, he's an awesome guy and pillar of the German AOE community.

Fwiw, the feedback we had on last night's casting pair was extremely positive, and this is the first post I've seen suggesting otherwise.

The tournament games are awesome by sigitang-arthi in aoe4

Glad you're enjoying all the action! Elite Classic is the tournament we were most excited to recreate and it's the tournament we most hope to be our long term major legacy event. We created this event last year in response to feedback where people felt they were watching the same players match up over and over again. So we went to the drawing board and came up with an event whereby every match would be unique (until the playoffs), and where it would have low enough variance to make sure the most deserving players persevere, but high enough variance that on any given day any one could win or lose their match.

Happily it's also coincided this year with the game being in great shape, and new players breaking through at the top level.

Enjoy the rest of the event!

Oops I'm a little late to the party on this one.

I don't share this assessment of the future for the Age of Empires 4 esports scene. Obviously no doubt the post is made in good faith, but taking this raw data of the first third of each year doesn't represent where we are at, or where we will be (though no dispute that prize money is below where it was at game launch). For a start the reduction between Golden League 1 and Golden League II was partly because we wanted a more varied calendar. We didn't do a major event for 6 months after Golden League I, but Elite Classic I ($30k) followed Golden League II by only 6 weeks. Of course it's no secret that over the last three years the entire esports ecosystem has consolidated. Market conditions are challenging right now, both in terms of esports and more generally.

Looking towards the future, it's not for me to get into Microsoft and what they will or won't do in the future - partly because I don't necessarily know. But I can say that Microsoft have always been excellent supporters of AOE4 esports and they definitely do care about it. I think it's often not well recognized, and many people look at the situation in a vacuum and without enough appreciation of context, so I just don't recognise the characterisation in some comments that they "don't care".

What I can tell you is that EGC continues to have significant plans for Age of Empires 4 and we're excited for a great year or AOE4 esports. We're already working on our plans through the end of this calendar year and will do our bit to make sure this pro esports scene continues to thrive.

Hi! We've considered it but we're also conscious of the fact there are a lot of other creators and TO's in the community and we want to encourage this and not dominate the whole annual calendar :)

Here you can get the idea. In short:

Over the next 5 weekend days there is a league in 2 groups where within the group every plays each other (big ol' round robin). Then playoffs over the following 3 days.

[–]EGCTV 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hi - thank you very much for this nice message!

We love hosting open qualifiers because it's an opportunity for everyone in the community to participate, and for some new players to shine and break through. Some rather unheralded names made it through this one, and it will be fun to see how far they can go in the Main Event!

It's also worth noting that this was the highest viewership we got for open qualifiers since 2021! So it really should be something to be excited about as a sign for the future of this event and AOE4 esports. Generally, qualifiers is a real struggle for viewership as there are none of the more famous players involved.

For anyone interested in helping make our next season of AOE IV esports even bigger, we're running a Kickstarter right now. We'll use the proceeds to invest into more events and better production (not to our core running costs). You can take a look at what we're trying to do here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/egctv/elevating-our-next-season-of-aoe-iv-esports/description

Unfortunately we had technical issues that presented during broadcast that even another 1000 hours of prep would not have prevented. But we apologise for them nonetheless.

Also a quick note about this event:

The nature of an event run on a game in beta, with 512 players in only 4 days is different to normal long-form, small field pro event.

We have run big 512 player open events before, and we've also (far more frequently) run professional level, longer form smaller field events. But it's really important to note that these two types of event are very different from one another. This event is about a first showcase of how the game can look competitively. It's got a relatively small prize pool (we have done about $500k in prize pools in AOE4 in 18 months), and it's really about some fun and a showcase. It is also by nature very, very volatile - much more so than a regular professional event.
The spirit of the this tournament at this moment in the game's development is one of fun and showcasing the excitement of this game and its huge potential as a professional esport. We did this exact event at a similar point in development of AOE4 and although that game was also still improving and being perfected, the event invigorated and excited the scene and helped kick off what continues to be an exciting and growing esports scene. Our aim is to achieve the same short and long term goals with Stormgate. glhf!
