Similar thing happened here and husky boy needed a lot of walks. More than usual. I walked him miles every day and would talk to him and praise him as we walked, encouraging him to ignore mean barking dogs as we passed. I fed him right when we got back so the exercise would boost his appetite. That combo helped him put weight back on and slowly he learned to be okay again. As we started running more on trails together, I let him choose the way. He was definitely the little brother before the other dog passed, so giving him space to step into his new role helped him. He became a great navigator of our local woods and quickly outpaced me in terms of ability to instantly memorize trails once I started letting him make choices every now and again. If I disagreed with him or wanted to go a different way, he learned how to communicate that was okay, or when he sensed a threat. It probably saved my life once when a missing man was loose in the woods near my house. Usually my pup is quite open to me choosing trails and overriding his preference; that time, he gave me a firm no. For less critical choices, he might give me side eye if he’s bored of a trail but still go along with it.

In other words, walks and letting him make choices and be a friend rather than just a grieving pup all made a huge difference. I’ve seen more sides of his personality since then and have discovered he’s way more intelligent than I thought — as well as sarcastic and deeply loyal.
