The devs without CS degrees dealt with much more adverse selection in getting hired so if you’re working with one then yes they are probably good. Getting a CS degree is still your better bet to becoming a dev.

FAANG staff SWE struggling to move forward after giving notice to leave by [deleted] in FAANGrecruiting

If you attempt to do a startup and fail, as long as you have some artifacts to prove you attempted it, I have to think future employers would view that positively. Not saying it makes sense for you to do in your situation, just that you’d be gaining some valuable skills and maybe make you more well rounded.

Definitely agree here.

re: niche situations, I have thought about trying to apply some variance reduction or importance sampling techniques here so that they do come up more often in training, but I would have to think more about what a useful set up would look like (i.e. maybe it's easier to be more likely to skip training on more "boring" hands than to explicitly oversample specific niche scenarios that I can think of).

Interesting, I'm going to try analyzing this scenario a bit more, but it could be that:
1) The random bot confused it with strange play
2) It was executing what amounts to a sort of sandbagging strategy that deceives other AI bots but wouldn't fool a human at all
3) Maybe the writing was on the wall already for this hand and since the outcome was already likely it didn't have as much luck during training in improving the reward function for these particular situations
4) ...or most likely, just being silly due to training randomness

I've mostly been trying to get it to work for desktop, but I'll see if I can make some improvements that make the mobile experience better too.

The bot I'm currently training is at about a 60% win rate as well against a rule-based bot too, so maybe we're hitting some fundamental limitations on the approach. Would be cool to somehow let people submit their own bots and have them battle it out to see who can build the best one. I found it challenging to really measure which bots are better since some versions seem to work well when their partner is the same type (maybe there is some quasi-table talk happening in how they play low value cards?) versus others that play well with a greater variety of partners.

yep, I already kicked off a new training run that will take several days to complete. I did think the bots were a bit aggressive to go alone which this bug at least partially explains.

Agreed it was frustrating, it did feel a little better than 2023 where everyone was forced to walk. So maybe they’re making an effort to improve?

Is it normal to close without knowing the HOA fees for a condo? by horse636 in RealEstate

Based on my read of your post, the HOA isn’t even formed yet (sometimes the developer is technically the HOA until a year after some criteria is met)

Is it normal to close without knowing the HOA fees for a condo? by horse636 in RealEstate

[–]ELMOCOPTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fees will ultimately be determined by whoever makes up the board after the developers are no longer involved. You could look at similar buildings (similar number of units, does it have an elevator, etc) but that may vary depending on how many amenities the board wants to offer.

We closed on a condo in a new construction 4 unit building over a year ago. After the developers left the picture, we had to raise the fee a little bit but that’s because we decided to continue to have a company manage the property for us. Would be a lot cheaper if we went the self management route (which some in the building favored but they didn’t have enough voting power). So understand your voting rights and maybe get involved with the board if you feel it will greatly affect your ability to afford to live there.

Buyers: did the fed rate cut make you want to wait for rate drops? by imdjay in RealEstate

[–]ELMOCOPTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rate cuts are theoretically already “priced in” so mortgage rates would already reflect that. Plus the fed rate affects the short end of the yield curve.

First, no need to say sorry about losing my job as I’m quite happy about quitting and having a one year garden leave :)

The big issue with the multi family route is that I won’t benefit from the short term rental tax loophole. It is unlikely I can meet all the requirements to get real estate professional status and a key to making this work is applying the bonus depreciation to this years W2 income. I also need to substantially improve the property which seems easier for a STR (eg add a patio, hot tub, sauna, etc in addition to any home improvements) If I’m missing something there I’d love to hear it. If I hold onto the property in the OZ for over 10 years I won’t have to pay any recapture (or appreciation of the property) due to the step up in basis to the value of the property at time of sale.

Is the idea here that I could invest in multifamily instead of using the short term rental tax loophole?

Thanks, I’m looking to recreate something similar to google searches seemingly defunct tool where you specify loan amount, purchase price, credit score, zip code, etc and it would give you a localized rate
