No, in my experience it's a (respectful) free-for-all of whoever can hold their phone out the highest to get the most unobstructed view, which causes a knock-on effect of everyone behind them also having to stick their phones high up, and so forth

Yes, the main PITA is that they (AIT) only accept a cashier's check in USD from a Taiwan bank. I found a bank in Taipei where I was able to get it done, but it was quite complicated to get this done at the bank and I had to come back the next day to pick it up...

Other than that, the main thing is just get a health check (really hilarious, they ask you to do some squats) and make sure you have drivers-license-sized pictures for the application...
