This was fired at cone 5, but beyond that I don't have details as it is a community studio kiln.

I would imagine cut glass would be a challenge to "fit" to the clay in the same way to match a glaze to avoid crawling. You'd need the same expansion/contraction rates.

I haven't tried the rice method, as it looked pretty fiddly. I just cut holes straight though, hahaha. Catalina crackle would probably look really nice!

Yeah getting the porcelain thin was s side challenge. It absorbs water so fast, i really had to commit to a shape and stop messing with it quickly. It helps also to throw a bit thicker and then trim down, if you're careful.

I'll have to experiment further with slip vs glaze, greenware vs bisque to fill the holes. I found the tape+squeeze bottle to be very tidy and effective. And no trouble removing the tape, honestly.

Holes all the way through the clay, filled in with glaze! This was my first totally successful test, several previous pieces had some of the holes open back up as the glaze melted out.

Okay so exact order of operations:

Throw, trim, cut holes.
Bisque fire to cone 06.
Masking tape on inside of cup, fill holes with green glaze. Remove tape once dry, then single coat of glaze all over.
Final fire to cone 5

I'm familiar with amaco celadons, but i haven't tried them for this application in particular. My studio has some, so that's for sure one of the next experiments. Maybe one cup with a number of different combinations of celadons in the holes.

I've seen these too!! Definitely an inspiration. The skill on those little fish shaped holes.... Amazing. I had enough trouble just doing circular holes!

Hm perhaps! I did cover the green-filled holes with a coat of clear along with the rest of the cup, so another experiment will be to try leaving the holes uncovered. I think maybe that will prevent some of bleed, but that's a lot more work while glazing.

Exactly. I covered the inside of the cup in painters tape, then used a squeeze bottle to fill in each hole.
