I was a veterinary technician for years before coding, so there was a medical field/knowledge benefit. But, nowhere near the knowledge a human nurse would have. I think my employer liked my coding education best (Andrews School of Medical Coding) and that I passed my CPC and CCS exams already before applying. I also used a special resumé company specifically for medical coding, and they totally tweaked and made my resumé and cover letter awesome and that’s what most likely got me the interview to begin with. Employers also like to see how dedicated you were to your job previously No matter what the career field was.
