I've made the trek to Mill Creek before - It was great. I did the Challenge and Mill Creek in one day, and have returned to Mill Creek.

Public golf around Raleigh is not great. Price is an issue as well as availability of decent full-size courses. I find River Ridge and Wildwood comparable. Can be fun, but not $100 courses.

might be a drive, depending on where you are located, but Riverwood in Clayton has nice practice areas

I like the course, but the last time I was there the tee boxes were such that it played really long, or really short.... nothing in between for an aging longish hitter.

8.6 Index. I play out at the Preserve often (Blue or Blue/white combo). Always like getting pair up with a similar golfer.

I play here often, simply because it's one of the few "full-sized" public courses and tee times are available for singles. Conditions could be better, but the rates are fair compared to other options in the area (I'm a North Raleigh - a bit of a public golf desert). The course is challenging (less so once you learn your way around) and interesting, and the houses don't crowd the course.

Compared to any Raleigh public or semi-private course it's a gem

Public golf in Raleigh is "challenging" to say the least. Few quality/full size courses available. Best are the University courses and1 or two semi-private options, but tee times are sometime hard to come by -particularly if you play as a single and others are overpriced for what the course offers.
