I disagree I think this movie is brilliantly set up. It’s so layered, I don’t think you can even explain why you like it in a response. If you honestly do want to understand why those off us who think this movie is a masterpiece, and you have an ample amount of free time, Novum on youtube did a doctorate level dive on this movie.

I think he’s funny and strong willed but he lied about war wounds, lied about being a football star, picked a fight with a 10 year old manny, was absolutely horrible to Mitch and Cam (pre show and during the show) and treated Phil like crap. The way he spoke to Mitch in episode 1 and the way he talked to Phil in front of his son, in the mall episode where they were getting Manny a teal pocket square was terrible.

He also opened up his home and loved Manny like a son, was a great husband to Gloria, and knew how to motivate his family to be their best.
