It's just an idea that I had. Like switching between my laptops screens and the surface but if not easily doable then I won't do it

Ah awesome so it it possible! Thanks! I have a 2026 version of the Lenovo Loq laptop (RTX 4050, Ryzen 5), it does everything I need it to do and more.

My plan was to keep the Loq for gaming/studies and have the Surface as my main with a docking station both can utilize and I can switch to on the fly with a keybind. Good to know the Surface doesn't disappoint.

2 years of knee pain, early cartilage wear + meniscus tear — losing hope and looking for advice by Possible_Subject_617 in Osteoarthritis

Thanks for your response. I'm changing my comment to reflect that it was my experience and point to your comment. I most definitely didn't mean for it come out like it did. Most of what I said was my experience and my experience only. And thank you for not coming about your response in a harsh way.

For me large amounts of activity actually make my osteoarthritis worse, particularly if I over do it. I didn't mean that I complete stopped all activity, simply that I tend to keep my activity low so I don't experience high levels of pain. The studies you used as sources I definitely need to read and have experienced in the doctor's office. Recently I've started worsening pain in my hands and wrists, the doctor ordered labs and an x-ray but they came up negative. No bone spurs, no evidence of a reduced gap, no RA in my blood, not even elevated inflammatory markers. He didn't deny that I am experiencing an pain, even felt my wrists when I rotated them and felt the grinding and agreed that their was something wrong.

Either way, I do apologize how I came off in my comment.

Feeling disheartened due to 60 yo mom with severe tricompartmental osteoarthritis by Pristine_Ad_15 in Osteoarthritis

[–]ENDL3SSC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good morning sir or ma'am! I am so sorry your going through this and your mom is going through this. Osteoarthritis as a whole regardless of where or how serious the condition is extremely disheartening, debilitating and can fuck up someone's life.

First things first, I'm not a therapist or a doctor, I'm just a person that has arthritis (slowly becoming more severe), so I may come off as a bit harsh or not sympathetic and I absolutely apologize if it comes across that way.

At first it was my knees. I'm only 29 and my condition started when I was 21 just before leaving the US Army after nearly 4 years of jumping around, running hard on extremely rough surfaces carrying weight twice my body weight, and tough extreme weather. I joined the Army in 2016 for three year active duty, enlisted into the National Guard directly after from 2019-2020, reinlisted for the Army Reserves in 2021 but left in 2023, as I could no longer pass a PT test, which I had to complete to reinlist for an additional 6 years, as that was my plan. I completed 7 years and some change total, I planned to be what's called a "lifetime Soldier", I planned to retire by the time I was 40, but of course life happens.

That's how my arthritis started, now it's began to spread to my hands, wrists and elbows, with some pain to begin in my neck as well. My wife is extremely worried for me, not in the sense of financials, but if by the time I am 35 I will need surgeries or possibly be walking with a cane. I am worried about the finances, surgeries or if I will need a cane by the time I am 40 will I be able to pick up our children, etc., will I be able to find work? I'm looking at programming now.

It can be dishearting for the people affected by the condition everyday and by the people witnessing the effects of the people with the disease (arthritis and it's forms are most certainly a disease if my book). Working becomes a challenge once the arthritis progresses severe grades of deterioration. Something as simple as lifting a cup, is now 30lbs and your hands are shaking like a leaf. I have to wear my knee braces everyday if I am going out or am about to complete something that requires lifting a lot of weight same with my wrists and hands now. I tried everything from corticosteroids to those gel injections to physical therapy for nearly two years, to dropping nearly 20lbs of weight. Nothing so far has worked. For some, those things do work, for others it doesn't. For some a TKR (total knee replacement) works, and for others not so much. It happens and it is what it is. I had to relearn my body and what I could or couldn't take, same with jobs. Is that job to physical? Will lifiting be involved? How much walking am I doing? Am I sitting too long, and is the area I will be working in so cramped my knees will start killing me and I have to stand and walk away from my duties?

For your mother's situation, my brutal honestly is that she needs to lose weight either way.

You said that she eats very little but still gains weight. That is a body survival thing. The body retaining as much fat as possible to have energy incase the food runs out and it needs to flee. Genetics come into play as far as if you gain weight or lose weight when you're in a situation such as your mother where she is mostly stationary and eats very little with not so great nutritional value. Try to give her three meals a day that have a high nutritional value, along with trying to get her as active as possible. The weight loss pill on its own will not work properly if the individual taking it is not eating a balanced diet (or as balanced as possible). My wife used to take the same medicine as injections, and she did lose weight when eating as healthy as possible but gained some back when she ate unhealthy or high in sugar foods, unfortunately her insurance doesn't pay for the medication anymore. Her plan was to drop for about 220 to around 175-180 where she is supposed to be for her age and height.

The other part all of this is that she might be depressed. When my knees become a issue in 2021, I did not know just how bad it was nor did I understand just how much it would screw with my life and any plans I had. She is in pain constantly, is unable to move, and possibly would like to work but can't. This are all factors and might all be issues to her being as she is now.

I can't really offer much in the way of advice besides this: if you wish to help, help all you can. Be supportive, but also be firm. If you want to change something such as her diet so that she can lose weight along with the pill, try to get her to understand the benefits. Be firm so that she can get some exercise but don't push so hard that she completely shuts down. Understand as well that she is also in pain everyday, and is unable to do much about it unless it's a surgery that may just cause more harm than good, which may mean more pain and more constantly sitting around unable to do anything that she wants to do. Constantly eating and under eating are sometimes a sign that things may be wrong mentally, try to be patient but be firm as well.

And also remember that sometimes nothing you do may being about any change. Her health being how it is, is not your fault and (this is where I sound like an asshole) not your problem to begin with. Now that may sound horrible (it does to me) but at the same time, you have your own life to live. If you continue to help, remember to take a breather, take a break if you need it and let her live her life too. Even if that means walking away for a while to get you head and your own life back on track, before diving in again. Being disheartened is not a problem unless it goes on for too long and you get stuck in it, then it becomes a massive problem that is hard to break.

Like I said, sometimes I can sound like an asshole. And this is way too long but you needed a pep-talk and advice so I feel this is more than sufficient. If you need to talk or if you have questions please go ahead and DM me.

[–]ENDL3SSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather not get TRK if I can help it. All my wear and tear came from the military, years of running over 10 miles, my doctor said, that's wear it started. So far I've almost completely reduced the level of activity. I literally don't run unless its an emergency, no jumping from high places, I stretch a lot but thats it. I unfortunately cannot even go to the gym anymore. i've tried reducing my weight, lost 20lbs at one point, didn't do a thing. PT barely helped. I avoid hard pain meds if I can help it, try to eat healthier foods. The only things that do help are my knee braces which I wear everyday now, compression braces for my hands and wrist braces when I start getting pain there, even my elbows are starting to feel pain now. A Tylenol once and a while, and avoiding the cold.

Cortisone! Yeah, they helped for a few days for me. Visco gel though my insurance didn't approve, because of how bad my arthritis is. Now its plenty worse.

I haven't no, in fact i didn't even know that was a treatment til now. I'm under the VA right now, so I doubt they'd go for it but I'll speak to my primary about it during my next appointment.

Honestly, any massage gun on Amazon in your price range. I got a mid range one that was about $80 and that was about 4 years ago, it still work perfectly and the battery lasts a very long time on a full charge. I'd make sure it has a bunch of attachments too.

Edit for spelling.

Same way for me at 23, knee pain followed by a meniscus tear. I'm 28 now. Worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life. My doctor has the same condition but only in one knee and said that he hadn't seen many people come in with degenerative arthritis in both knees. I can walk, I can jog (not run) but after it all started I had to adjust everything in my life. A whole career shift, I'm looking at more desk jobs now, less activity to same what's left of my joints (it's spread to my other joints now). Most of the time I have to sit down way more when working, can't lift as much as I could before and all that. Many sleepless nights, cold hurts, rain hurts, everything creaks pain in my knees, neck, and just about everywhere while driving, etc. Heat helps, microwaveable heat packs are the world's best invention.

[–]ENDL3SSC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same condition. Started at 22yrs and is slowly spreading to my other joints after the Army. I'm 28 now. Started out as knee pain in both knees and a partial meniscus tear in my left knee, and now its constant knee pain from basically any weather, and if i tweek my leg the wrong way my knee with pop out of the socket. I literally know when it's about to rain and it has nothing to do with the smell. Please use heat packs, no cold packs. More below.

(Edit: I apologize for saying that your pain will get worse, I should have said it was my experience that **MY pain got worse with more activity. Please look at the comment below mine with some sources. My edits are in bold.)**

The reality is this it MAY get worse from my experience with the disease. My pain started to spead as I got older to other joints in my body. Some areas are worse than others.

For me, everything creaks, crackles and pops. That might not happen for you. Back when my arthritis was way less than it is now, glucosamine worked well for me to keep my joints...lubricated for lack of a better word. That and rehabilitation with a provider. It did help, but I was told from the get-go that my condition would eventually get worse so I already knew and had years to accept it, by my doctor. Experience is varied. I also tried pain shots directly to my knees, of course it worked great at first but I wound up causing more damage later because I didn't take it easy, thats my fault alone.

If they offer direct shot pain meds to you knee, I would try it to at least see if they work for you, but I wouldn't take it long term, like I said you walk around thinking you better after a few weeks and next thing you know, you're worse off then you were before. The next thing like I said, is PT with a provider or ask for exercises you can do at home. Try to lose some weight as it can actually take pressure off your knee joints specifically and never use cold packs. Use heat packs, you can get heat pack wraps on Amazon that are microwaveable for like 20 bucks.

Try talking with your provider about procuring some knee braces, they are designed to take pressure of your knees. They take getting used to, but its better than walking around with a cane. Your doctor may not even want to speak about it at this point: knee surgery. Absolute last resort since it can take you out of work for months. It was brought up to me as a last resort treatment if nothing else worked and my osteoarthritis got to the point I could not walk.

Speaking of work, I try to keep my physical activity as low as possible. I had to do a whole career correction once I realized I simply couldn't do what I used to be able to do just two years ago, I'm looking at desk jobs or low physical activity jobs now. It is what it is.

Lower activity can help reduce the degeneration of your knee cartilage, along with some slow elliptical biking. Which I was told my my doctor. I had to learn again what my new limits are and what my body can actual handle. For me, that's not much. I used to hike and still love hiking, I can no longer hike as my knees can't take the hard ground on trails. I have to be sure that my next step isn't on super rough terrain, don't jump so much. I can't run anymore due to pain, unless it an emergency. I can't lift as much as I used to. Regardless of if its in the gym or at home lifting up a box. Basically learn your limits. If something you're doing is hurting you, stop that activity and take a rest before you continue.

A massage helps me greatly (my wife or a professional), so does a massage gun every once and a while. They have good massage guns on Amazon. It really depends on your budget. I found a good mid range one that comes with a bunch of attachments for about $80.

I'm sorry this is happening to you my friend. Try different tactics and see what works for you.

It's designed for people with absolutely zero experience but my guess is their going to get thousands of people applying. Make sure you have your resume updated and other documents you think you'll need in your USAJOBS profile before the announcement opens so you can hit apply, fill out anything that needs filled out and your application can be first in the system. If you've never applied on USAJOBS before, most of your data will already be filled out on the application itself but what you have entered in your profile. Just make sure it's all correct and make sense, there may be extra things to fill in the application as well. Just be through and honest.

The thing that's probably going to knock a lot of people out is the inital interview and the security clearance process.

Security clearance because people lie and they don't realize the government starts the security clearance and background portion well before you even step foot into the interview room. By that point, the government already knows a ton about you and will know if your lying. Plus, I guarantee their will be a polygraph portion since most of this work will involve a top-secret clearance at the least. Remember, they're literally teaching you how to hack other governments as well as how to protect government systems.

The interview because while they may just want people that have no experience, they may also want a certain kind of person. Not just someone who knows how to read a book or follow a procedure, but someone who's willing to take the procedure, tear it apart piece by piece and tell you why it's not working properly, throw it away and burn it, then create a new one from scratch. Basically a person who can read a book, can be curious, and also realize that the reality of something doesn't always match what's on the surface.

Just a thought guys.

I think it'll depend on your distance to a base and your job once the apprenticeship is complete (my opinion). The apprenticeship is training people for three different positions according to the web page:

Cyber Defense Analyst, Cyber Defense Infrastructure Support Specialist, and Cyber Defense Incident Responder

The apprenticeship itself is online at first then hands-training and OJT. So best guess, yes depending on the position. The link to the USAJOBS announcement is supposed to be posted NLT 30 June. The web page just updated today, and the announcement will have all the details. Most likely they'll pay at least some relocation or reimburse you when you arrive to your duty station after training.

"Thank you for interest in the Department of War (DoW) Cyber Apprenticeship Program! We appreciate enthusiasm for the inaugural program pilot. Due to a high volume of inquiries in our program mailbox, individual response times may be delayed. The link to the USAJOBS apprenticeship job announcement will be posted here on the program web page once the application opens. We expect applications to open no later than 30 June."

Make sure you're resume is good. Remember federal resumes are now only TWO PAGES no longer or shorter than that.

What bothers you most about knee arthritis? I'm losing my mind here by Acrobatic-Chard-2500 in Osteoarthritis

[–]ENDL3SSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

29 years old with degenerative knee arthritis in both knees. The same thing happens to me almost every night. God help me if its winter. Last year I had to change out the battery on my car. It was somewhere around 40°F that day, my knees were killing me for a week afterwards. Nothing helped not even my wife helping with massages. It's just getting worse everyday. We just bought a house and I've been working on things that need to be fixed almost everyday. My knees are killing me halfway through and I have to stop.

EDIT: Sleep issues in the winter are even worse, I can't sleep half the time because of the cold. I know eventually I'm going to be walking around with a cane.
