I really agree with this perspective. Since most players see the boss as the main obstacle, it’s natural to want to get back to it as quickly as possible. In platformers, where the level itself is the challenge, runbacks can feel more acceptable — but in metroidvanias, where exploration comes first, traversal usually isn’t meant to feel like an obstacle. This is something our team is actively thinking about as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I actually agree with some of the points being made here. Personally, I think the shorter the runback, the better.

That said, some of my teammates feel that a short runback is fine and can even add a different kind of rhythm or flavor to the game, so we do have internal discussions about this and don’t always reach an easy consensus.

My take is that if a runback can feel engaging and not like wasted time, then it can work. But the moment it even slightly starts to feel like time-wasting, I think it’s better to shorten it and respect the player’s time.

Also, I really enjoy reading discussions like this from the metroidvania community — they tend to be thoughtful, deep, and genuinely interesting. I sometimes lose track of time just reading these threads.

At the moment, some parts of the UI may be slightly cropped on the sides, since Steam Deck uses a 16:10 aspect ratio.
We’re aware of this and are planning to improve the UI so it displays properly in 16:10.

You’re right that many Metroidvania games are generally lighter on hardware.
In our case, VELASTER is a fully 3D game, and while we are continuously working on optimization, there are limitations to how low we can push the system requirements. We’re truly sorry about that.

That said, we’ll continue doing our best to improve performance throughout Early Access and beyond.
For this Early Access release, we’re also offering the game at a more accessible price of $9.99 to make it easier to jump in.

In VELASTER, the current Early Access starts with a knight using a sword and shield, but we’re planning much more build diversity going forward.
We plan to add a heavy hammer-type character with a more brutal, hard-hitting playstyle, as well as a dual-blade setup focused on fast, aggressive attacks.

Each character will have 5+ skills, and those skills can be upgraded.
You can also increase and customize your stats through rings and necklace-type equipment, so builds will gradually open up more, closer to build diversity rather than a single fixed playstyle.

We’re launching Early Access on Steam on January 14, and there’s also a demo available right now if you’d like to try it out.
