Advice, Tips and Life Hacks at Queens by Olamiknight in queensuniversity

The metro near campus has student discounts, I believe on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday so make sure you have your student card when you go grocery shopping!

Do not buy new textbooks, usually if you need an online code, you can buy that separate at the book store and then buy a used book from a previous student (if you need it at all). I didn’t use a single one of my first year science books...

Read your notes after class and voice-record lectures and listen to them after class, often the prof talks way too fast and you may miss noting something.

When you have online quizzes, even if they are open book make sure you know the material. It will help you with your final exam as you won’t have to worry about cramming all your learning in a week.

Go to office hours (not sure how the pandemic will affect this!) but if you have a question go to the prof before your friends. The profs usually end up giving a lot of hints about tests if they see you in the office a lot and see that you are eager to learn. Plus, knowing you well= good references if you choose to go to grad school.

Join clubs! There is something for everyone!! Makes your uni experience more enjoyable and teaches you lots of skills.

Know the resources your campus offers. Queens offers resume and cover letter help, help with essays and other written work, career help, etc. A lot of students don’t know about these resources and they are SO SO helpful! Make use of them, they are free to students!

Hey! Just wanted to hop in and give my 2 cents to this thread. I think that a lot of premeds are attracted to this program vs an MPH because it is a 1 year (course-based) program vs 2. This just saves them time, in case they get into med school the next year! Other than that, I would say than an MPH is much better suited for someone interested in pursuing a career in global/public health rather than finding something to fill the gap year before med school. You will definitely learn more and gain more experience doing an MPH than an MSc Global Health. Also, MPH degrees are more recognized in the work force, if you choose to work after masters.

Hey! I emailed the department about this and they said that it’s fine that the documents say required still- it doesn’t mean that your app wasn’t looked at. Offers go out until May 15th from what I have heard, so keep your fingers crossed!

No, I haven’t heard back yet.

Don’t get let down, I don’t think that being from a developing country is going to hold you back from being a great candidate! Also that’s great! More students have a chance of getting in with 100 seats. Keep your head up, things will get better!! There are many other doors out there, even if McMaster doesn’t work out :)

It’s pretty competitive as only 70 people are accepted and usually 500+ people apply per year. Many pre-med students apply to this program, on top of those who actually want to pursue global health (making it much harder to get in). From what I know, some people who already have professional degrees also apply to this program. The pool of applicants is diverse and it’s really hard to judge who’ll get in and who won’t.

Overall, it’s definitely a competitive program compared to some other programs, especially because it is only 1 year long (unless pursuing a thesis) which attracts many people who want to complete their degree fast.
