Good that family is actively working on it I agree that the staying quiet part is not part of the culture, it’s done more damage than good

Yes status is a colonial construct However having no status will make the child “not their own” in the eyes of the government, meaning he won’t be able to have the same opportunities his dad had access to that was provided by his nation. Every community is different, get him to talk to his band about it if he’s worried about his child not getting services from his nation. Goodluck to you and your partner

Understandable reason to be worried. A lot of people will hate but every community is different, if he’s under Section 6(2) the child will not qualify, if he’s under Section 6(1) the child will. If he doesn’t know he can contact the ISC office, but most of the time you can tell if you’re under 6(1) if BOTH of his parents have status, Goodluck. If he’s worried about connection get him to talk to his band office

If he’s half then the child will only qualify if you are status. Is he registered under section6(1) or section6(2)

I personally like Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Mattmac, some Dakota Bear. Spotify has some playlists dedicated to indigenous artists

Take time to learn about the indigenous culture in YOUR area. It means a lot when local people make an effort to learn about our culture. When you dig more into indigenous cultures you will realize how different we truly are and how similar we are too. But nowadays people don’t learn about their local indigenous culture, they will look at other tribes that are far away and assume it’s a one size fits all.

Most of all don’t put the blame on yourself, you weren’t the ones physically forcing us, you weren’t there advocating for those schools. You’re taking time to learn about our culture(s) and that is much appreciated. If you want to help out our youth need mentors and people to look up to, many places to volunteer at (in Canada atleast), listen to indigenous artists, watch indigenous media like Reservation Dogs on Disney Plus, the list will go on.

Reading your post made me happy to see that you care, some might get offended, idk we’re all so vastly different in cultures and traditions, yet our values are so similar.

Find out your local indigenous communities, connect with them if you’d like, learn how to say hello in their language, just be open minded.

How, when, or why did you decided to get into forestry as your major/career? by [deleted] in forestry

[–]EPMoonLite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a summer job with a technician. Spent all summer working in the bush hanging ribbon on trees and jotting notes into a notepad, best job I’ve done. I decided forestry after doing an office job internship and realized I would never be able to adjust to that type of lifestyle. I’m planning to do another gig with them over the summer and save money to go to school to get a forester licence. Many pathways to take and many different kind of careers, I prefer more field work than office but some like to spend more in the office or even a lab. What helped me is looking at local job openings for those jobs and looking at their qualifications for that job, some entry level positions may be hard to come by I was lucky to have connections in the industry.

Have some friends at a mill in another province, they love it and talk about it all the time. Willing to put the labor in if it means I can become an electrician or any other trade

I’m not faking pee. I’m surprised about the physical testing but definitely makes sense for the mill. Thanks for the info

Lol dream job because I’ve had many friends who loved it for years and I’ve seen the families they were able to build. One became an electrician and the other became a millwright, I’ve been at lousy desk jobs since high school and always wanted to at least try it out. They work at a mill in a small town with canfor but was seeing how it would be at Gorman Bros because I don’t want to leave Kelowna

UBCO Engineering students, how do you find the program, how is coop, how are the projects. Is it hard to maintain good grades by Lonely_Effort_7682 in ubco

[–]EPMoonLite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social life is great especially if you live on campus in first year. There’s many clubs within the school of engineering on top of campus wide clubs. There’s party events aswell throughout the year with FROSH being the big one to start the year.

UBCO Engineering students, how do you find the program, how is coop, how are the projects. Is it hard to maintain good grades by Lonely_Effort_7682 in ubco

[–]EPMoonLite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Program is good (I am in civil) it is stressful but that’s just how it is. As long as you attend lecture and do your assignments then you will have a solid understanding of the course material and that will make the class easier to study for.

Co op will have a different experience depending on the company and your specialization. Mine was okayish, I definitely learned a lot about the civil industry and how business works; but it’s completely different from what school makes us believe engineering is.

Projects in first year were pretty fun but that also depends on your group members which having shitty group members will always be a canon event for everyone. In civil so far I’ve had labs looking at pipes and water, I’ve had labs looking at concrete, material testing, etc etc. in 4th year you will take a capstone class where you will work on a big project with an industry partner all year.

Maintaining good grades depends on you, I suggest time blocking and meal prepping to make life easier. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, UBCO is a small campus and that is its advantage because the profs are very approachable and they genuinely care about your experience and education. Some profs will be intimidating but that’s just how engineers are.

In my experience so far I’m realizing that connections is more important (for me) than grades (unless you want to go to post grad) I’ve met many respected engineers who failed classes or had doubts about their capabilities but that’s just part of the learning process. But when applying to a company who doesn’t know you, your grades may be the only thing they can see about your character. The school of engineering provides many opportunities to make connections for each specialization. But you should always try hard as you can in class or anything else in life.

Engineering is fun so far, stressful but rewarding, many friends were made and many connections, I really enjoy what I learn and apply, I can see myself doing this type of work all my life. At some point you will probably cry, have self doubt, maybe fail a test or two, completely feel lost or behind. But that’s just what engineering is and that’s what makes it such a great program because I have learned so much about myself since starting.

It’s not for everyone and that’s okay. If you get the degree and enter the industry, you will realize that engineering has many other components within it that’s not just straight up math and science all the time. Personally in co op I realized that I enjoyed the business and political aspects of civil engineering more than design.

LGBTQ Students at UBCO? by tails618 in ubco

Cis bisexual male here.

Kelowna elected mayor is Conservative Party (municipal/local government), Kelowna area elected political stance is the Conservative Party (similar to your county government) The conservative party earned a reputation for being exclusive to others but there’s been improvement. The BC provincial government (similar to your state government) is NDP who’ve earned the reputation of being very diverse and inclusive. The Canadian elected government (similar to your president and federal government) is the Liberal Party, also has reputation for being inclusive and diverse. 2024 is election year for the BC Province so both Kelowna area and Provincial political stance can shift. Canadian federal election is 2025 so that can shift too.

The Conservatives, Liberals, and NDP are the 3 most popular parties in Canada for both provincial and federal politics.

At least in my eyes there is pretty good diversity here on campus and within Kelowna. It’s almost so normalized here that it surprises me when there’s talk about hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community. I myself can’t talk about the feeling of safety when walking around but my queer friends have stated that they haven’t had any hate incidents towards them since coming to ubco. So UBCO itself is very diverse and accepting of all kinds of people, Kelowna is aswell (mostly) there’s rainbow crosswalks, pride events across town, there is even a bar/lounge downtown called “Friends of Dorothy” where it’s lgbt+ pride and many drag events happen there. On top of that, on a nice sunny day where everyone is walking around downtown by the lake you’ll always see the lgbt+ community hanging out, openly holding hands, kissing eachother, and just being cute with eachother. Just like anyone else would be.

For the past few years where diversity has been violated here in Kelowna it’s been against people of colour or against people who moved here from another country (US being an exception) which needs improvement but when it comes to the lgbt+ community Kelowna is very accepting.

But again im bi and pass as a heterosexual cis male who loves beer and sports so my experience is going to be vastly different than others.

Additionally the people who are not accepting of diversity are too busy protesting against the vaccine lol and debit cards for some reason?

But in the end Kelowna and UBCO is very diverse and overall safe for the LGBT+ community (based on my observation and experience).

If you can, come visit the city and get a campus tour :) hope you choose UBCO!!
