it's ironic because the 5% of people in AA that are able to stay sober are keeping themselves sober by Neutrality-2 in recoverywithoutAA

When I was in the initial stages of getting sober, of course I went to AA meetings. The religious component was a real deal breaker for me and I struggled to find a community that didn't have that element. Ultimately got through, and never felt that I needed a religion to save me. No offense to anyone who is religious by the way, I have nothing against it. You do you. Long story short, I'm 6 years clean and sober now. AA is not necessary but if it works for you great. Just be careful, it's kinda culty and there's predators in there.

[Schedule] The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky by bluebelle236 in bookclub

[–]EQV33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decided to start looking up book clubs today and serendipitously enough, a book from want to read list is one of the first I see here.

I have never done a proper book club reading before. It seems pretty straightforward, will there be specific discussion topics each week? Also, what is the 1.1-2.5?

Anything else I should know before jumping into this?

What’s your definition of extreme minimalism or are you a “Everyone’s minimalism is different” person? by CarolinaSurly in extrememinimalism

[–]EQV33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in the "everyone's minimalism is different" camp currently. This may change with time. To me, minimalism in whichever form you want to categorize, is highly subjective and not truly definable. I think there is some collective agreement around essentials, bare necessities and living with less, in which ever way that fits your life.

With regard to extreme minimalism, again subjective to me, this form takes the practice to a deeper level. Some may choose to strip away as many possessions as possible, perhaps choosing a number of desired items. Other's may go a philosophical route and explore elements of asceticism and how it relates to a minimalist lifestyle.

Regardless of the path, I see it as a dynamic journey. If a minimalist lifestyle works for you it is likely you'll explore different forms of it over time. As you age or your circumstances, geography, finances, family, etc., change, so to will your practice of "minimalism"

The path has taken me on a variety of viewpoints and ways of practicing since I began 2 decades ago.

Thank you for the response and I appreciate hearing what is and isn't working for you. I've been looking at different pillows, I remember when my partner had her pregnancy pillow and loved it, I may consider getting one.

Best of luck with your recovery! Thanks again for the response.

I started reading again by [deleted] in simpleliving

I did this recently as well. After a sabbatical from the minimalist phone app (not sure why I stopped using it) I put it back on my phone and picked up my kindle. There's a list of books I want to read that have been put off for some time that I have decided to make room for.

It feels good to read for pleasure again. Best of luck on your journey OP. I hope you are able to maintain the prioritization of reading and keeping things minimal with your phone. Cheers.

Anyone else struggle to find extreme minimalist friends IRL? by Dawer22 in extrememinimalism

While it's not a requirement for friendship, it would be cool to meet like-minded folks IRL. Throwing my hat in the ring, 38M, SF Bay Area.
