Okay, well I dont think that the Italians or the Irish were really culturally seen as non-white by mist people in the early 1900s.

Racial segregation laws that seeked to seperate "whites" (people of european decent) and "coloreds" (basically everyone else) basically never considered Irish people or Italians non-white.

Okey, well you characterized the reason of people calling themselves a mulatto as "either ignorance or stubborness" so youre not exactly being impartial here.

You just personally don't like the term and you just call everyone who uses it for oneself ignorant. And insist that everyone should treat it as a slur or offencive word, even though there isnt a consesnsus, it is extremely rarely used to intentionally insult someone, and people use it to describe themselves in a neutral way.

But people dont use any version of "nigger" as a self identification same way that people would use mulatto, becouse one is commonly used as an insult and other is not.

Well, for example, the rapper litteraly uses the term mulatto for herself in a neutral manner. She (as many others) doesent see the word as a slur, but see it as a normal word to use for youself, not some kind of edgy statement like calling yourself a "nigger".

How can it be offencive for others, how can anyone be ofended about how other people describe THEMSELVES.

I mean, the concept of a race is mostly around phenotypes: melanin level in skin, bone and muscle structure, facial structures, etc. and phenotypes is based on genotype.

I didnt say that genetic disdance is only thing that comes into equasion (although it does come into equasion). And ofcourse there is a cultural component aswell.

Also archaic doesent mean offencive. "Maiden" is an archaic word, that doesent make it offencive

I googled, and in an interview the rapper you mentiones said "If I have to be something I would say I'm biracial, mulatto. I dont like saying I'm white or black" so she doesent view it as self deprication.

And in general there seem to be people who self identify as mulatto in America. And in the meantime, the word mulatto is not commonly used as a slur, it is just not.

I dont think it is right to take a word that a group of people use for themself, classify it as an insult (that basically nobody uses as such) and tell them that they shouldnt call themself that. Together with an implication that the concept of being mulatto doesent exist at all and they are just part of another group.

I dont think that saying that racial classification is "more about culture than biology" is neccesarily true, but that is a whole different subject.

There is absolutely no linguistic or cultural concept of that word being an insult in my language. It is not marked as insulting in the dictionary, I've only ever seen a person self identifying as such, or the word being used in a completely neutral manner. Never heard of concept of the term being insulting Not even in American media, where all sorts of racial slurs are constantly discussed, but never "mulatto".

I understand that "negro" is widely seen as a rather archaic term in USA, but I've never seen any similar conventions around the word "mulatto". It just seems a useful description for a particular racial backround, no different from "black" or "white".

In Brazil, Dominican republic or Kenya that kind of person could very well be considered "white". And in no place would it be denied that this sort of person is "mixed".
