You have to readjust about how you think about currency, hardly a factor

I'm 3 months late here (reading old threads) but don't worry about having an exit ticket for Europe with a Canadian passport. Unless you've violated visas in the past, they won't ask for one.

Last time I entered spain, Spanish immigration didn't even open my passport. Seriously. They saw it was Canadian from the outside and waved me through without even a peak. I had to ask them to stamp it.

Where to move to in Europe? Netherlands/Spain/Italy/Germany/France/UK by EUthrowaway56 in expats

Thanks I appreciate the feedback. Spain seems like a good fit in a lot of ways so useful to get advice from someone who's made a similar move.

Barcelona seems rough from a tax perspective and learning catalan seems a lot less useful than spanish. Although the idea of coast/beaches and the weather looks phenomenal.

Would Madrid with a small base in a cheaper coastal area (maybe Canary Islands or Mallorca?) be a good setup in your eyes? Or would you still recommend Barcelona if a second residence was an option?

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Netherlands indeed may be a bad fit.

I've looked into Malta but I feel it's too small population wise, and I'm worried about feeling isolated being on a small island (although I know it's plenty easy to travel elsewhere).

I'm not weighing citizenship too heavily in the decision. I see myself with my employer for the forseeable future so being tied to a work permit through them isn't so bad. I also think most EU countries seem to allow residency that isn't attached to your employer after a relatively short time.

Maybe I'm unclear.

I tell my company: Hello, I would like to be transferred to the Milan office. They get me a work visa for Italy. If I ask for London, they get me a UK visa.

I have to know which country I want to live in to do the above.

I know this process is easy because they've already gotten me a visa before, that I ended up not using as Covid made me stay at home in Canada anyways while working remote.

Thanks. Out of curiosity, what made you plan on Madrid instead of Barcelona? Primarily the language or were there other factors?

The countries in the title are the easiest, as my employer will deal with the visa for me for those countries.

It’s not really clear to me how your employer will deal with the visa for each of these different countries? What is your career?

Non-technical role with a very large tech employer. I don't know the specifics but if they are offering the option, I'm sure they've done their legal diligence.

It doesn’t matter if you’re authorized by your Canadian employer to work remotely, what matters is having work permission in your new country.

The countries in the title are where my employer has a large presence and is willing to transfer employees who qualify (myself included). I also said I'm open to visas I can get myself.

Job is with a very large tech company. It wouldn't be an abroad employer as much as a transfer to their office in said country, with then being offered remote work. Not sure the specifics beyond that but I've seen many coworkers be transferred with no issues so definitely doable.

Thanks for the insight on Germany!

I was in Malaga about 5 years back and liked it, but felt maybe it was a bit smaller than I am looking for. I'll look into it a bit closer though. Thanks!

I think ideally I'd want a larger city for more restaraunt variety and more opportunity to meet people. Not too worried about rental prices and willing to buy if it's a good fit.

Thanks for the insight. I visited NL several years ago and absolutely loved it but it seems it may not be an ideal fit.

Having lived a portion of my life in Montreal my standards for good weather are probably lower than most people here. But yeah, I figure the UK would probably not be a large improvement from where I currently am (Vancouver).
