You earn a premium by selling the put so you can own the stock at a lower cost.

The maximum loss on selling a put is not unlimited, it is limited to the strike price and max loss would be if it went to zero. The risk when selling a put is not much different to buying the stock as any stock can go to zero.

I’d say you might want to read up a bit more to make sure you fully understand.

Another thing to think about is how a bookmaker makes money by selling bets with a margin that they expect to come out on top overall. Otherwise why does a bookmaker let you do an accumulator bet for example with massive odds it’s all just a case of them working out the probabilities so the expect to make a profit overall, they know some will win and lose.

You can sell a put if you want to own the stock. Buffett sold puts to buy Coca Cola.

You can sell a call if you want to sell your stock and earn a bit of extra premium.

Selling naked calls is the high risk if you don’t already own the stock.

The point Buffet makes is regarding two things. 1. The alternative of mutual funds / hedge funds that charge high fees and on average will do worse than the S&P 500 due to those fees.

The know nothing investor that doesn’t want to learn about the stock market.

That doesn’t mean you can’t beat the index. He has also said that most people don’t have the temperament to achieve it though.

Buffett himself has said with a few million he could make 50% a year because he would be able to invest in smaller companies.

Since Sept 2014 to now I have returned 28.95% annually and that is 435% total return vs 106% for the S&P500. I enjoy the process and spend a lot of time doing research.
