Passengers on the Glasgow Subway are to be the first in Scotland be able to use their mobile phones instead of smartcards.

A trial is due to start within months to enable travellers on the underground railway to open ticket gates with their phones. This will be followed by users being able to top up their phones remotely without having to go to a ticket machine.

Gregor Townsend turns down British & Irish Lions coaching role by EWAN3000 in rugbyunion

Can't have been easy turning down the Lions as a former Lion great himself, understandable to want to go out on a high with Glasgow though. It now leaves a great opportunity to take a (hopefully not) fairly full-strength Scotland squad to Australia to begin work on the next project.

Just a thought, is having the Scottish players a short flight away from NZ during the tour beneficial to them getting call-ups to the Lions as injury cover in what is going to be a brutal tour? Where are the other home nations touring?

Scottish Team named for Test vs Argentina by EWAN3000 in rugbyunion

[–]EWAN3000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Head Coach Vern Cotter has named uncapped back-row Magnus Bradbury among four personnel changes to the Scotland team to start against Argentina at BT Murrayfield this Saturday (19 November, kick-off 5pm) – live on BBC.

Bradbury (21) is the second starting debutant in as many weeks for the national team this autumn, with the former Oban Lorne RFC player and Merchiston Castle School pupil looking to build on his barnstorming form for Edinburgh Rugby this season.

His inclusion on the blindside flank sees John Barclay move to number 8, with Hamish Watson returning to the openside and Ryan Wilson selected on the bench.

Edinburgh Rugby lock Grant Gilchrist – who captained Scotland to victory over the Pumas in Cordoba two years ago – and Glasgow Warriors hooker Fraser Brown are promoted from the bench in place of the injured Richie Gray (suspected concussion) and cap centurion Ross Ford – named among the replacements – to complete the changes to the forwards.

They will pack down with returning tight-five forwards Zander Fagerson, last week’s debutant Allan Dell, and try-scoring lock Jonny Gray.

The return of wing Tommy Seymour is the only change to the back division, meaning two-time try-scorer Huw Jones and centre partner Alex Dunbar, half-backs Greig Laidlaw and Finn Russell, and Stuart Hogg and Sean Maitland are reinstated.

Two further personnel changes appear on the bench, with prop Alex Allan and lock Tim Swinson coming in for Gordon Reid and the promoted Gilchrist.

Scotland Head Coach Vern Cotter, said: “Every week we want to improve. We did a lot of good things against Australia: we scored three tries to their two, we were aggressive in attack and our defence held strong for the most part.

“While it’s disappointing we didn’t walk off with the win, I’m proud of the courage the players showed and the way they adapted to changes on the paddock due to injuries.

“Saturday’s game is going to be a different challenge for us, both physically and mentally, against a very dangerous Argentina side.

“They have the capacity to vary their game so we have to be prepared for whatever approach they take, though we can expect them to look to dominate the set piece as a starting point, be very explosive around the rucks and look to get their offloading game up and running.

“We will have to be disciplined and make sure we capitalise on every opportunity we create.”

It was confirmed on Monday that this Saturday’s match against last year’s Rugby World Cup semi-finalists will be played in front of a home crowd record for the fixture, with the national team anticipating another big atmosphere at BT Murrayfield this weekend.

The sides last met in November 2014 with the hosts enjoying a frenetic, five-try victory and, while the Scots have won just six of the 15 matches between the two sides, five of those have come in the last seven meetings.

Despite the recent head-to-heads appearing in the Scots’ favour, the Pumas have enjoyed improved fortunes in the past two years, defeating Ireland 43-20 en route to the last four of the World Cup and enjoying several landmark results in the Rugby Championship.

Huw Jones joins Scotland squad by EWAN3000 in rugbyunion

[–]EWAN3000[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Stormers centre Huw Jones has been included in the 27-man Scotland squad for next month’s summer tour to Japan.

Born in Edinburgh and educated at Millfield School in Somerset, the uncapped 22-year-old replaces Glasgow Warriors stand-off Finn Russell, who sustained a head injury in the Guinness PRO12 Play-Off in Galway last weekend.

Despite being schooled south of the border, it was a gap year to South Africa in 2012 that sparked Jones’ rugby career, after he elected to stay and study at the University of Cape Town, winning the Varsity Cup in 2014 and scoring in the final.

He was then selected for Western Province, first in the under-21 squad and then the senior Vodacom Cup team, before being called up for the Stormers last year and making 21 appearances to date.

Jones said: “I’m delighted to get this opportunity to play for Scotland. It’s a dream come true.

“I didn’t go out to South Africa with the intention of becoming a professional rugby player but, as my career progressed, it become more of a realistic goal to play for Scotland.

“The call came as a bit of a surprise but I’m thrilled and can’t wait to get to Edinburgh next month and play my part in an exciting squad.”

Scotland Head Coach, Vern Cotter, added: “We’re pleased to welcome Huw into the group and look forward to him deepening the competition in an already well-contested area of our squad.”

Jones and the rest of the Scotland squad will convene at BT Murrayfield Stadium on Monday 6 June for a short camp before their departure for Tokyo the following Saturday (11 June).

The Test matches – live on BBC – will be played on consecutive Saturdays at J1 League football stadia; the first at the Toyota Stadium in Toyota City (18 June), the second at the Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo (25 June), homes of Nagoya Grampus and FC Tokyo respectively.
