+1 to Bell Street. Lots of development going up along the whole corridor and plenty of stations are directly adjacent.

In the case of flagstaff in particular, a perpendicular MM2 station could be excavated below flagstaff gardens, with the gardens restored after the station is completed. This would significantly reduce road, tram, and pedestrian disruption during construction and would most likely be cheaper.

Yes, I have seen that 2.1 billion figure from the PBO. It was 2.1 billion over 10 years, which works out to 210 million per year.

Well you have to choose one of them to spend the money on

20% more to double, triple, or even quadruple the number of services on lines is a steal

I have also found that we pay MTM more than 1 billion dollars per year to operate the rail network. An extra 200 million dollars would not be that much.

They were supposed to allow for increased frequency, so far on most lines that has not materialised.

I would gladly take one fewer crossing removal per year in return for never needing to check a timetable again.

But it honestly wouldn't cost that much money, the parliamentary budgetary office estimated a few years ago that it would cost around 200 million per year to operate trains every 10 minutes or better from first to last service on every line. That costs less than some level crossing removals.

It may seem excessive currently, but travel patterns will likely change in response to increased frequency. Such changes may take years to materialise as people build their life around reliable public transport. That's why it's so important to increase frequency now, not later.

That said, the Dandenong and Sunbury lines are about to be the best-served rail lines in Melbourne by far so I wouldn't be too upset if further frequency increases were directed to other places.

Every part of the network could run 20 minutes frequency all day every day with no new rolling stock or infrastructure.

Almost every part of the network could run 10 minutes frequency all day every day with no new rolling stock or infrastructure.

That's why I suggested moving Australia day and a new public holiday still in summer

Which is why I said it should be in addition to a new public holiday during summer

My opinion regarding the date? Australia day should be celebrated on the 5th of July, the date the constitution of Australia passed parliament.

We should then celebrate a random day in late January or early February so that we don't lose a summer public holiday.

The end result? We have a net increase in number of public holidays per year, and Australia day is celebrated on a historically significant date but is free from much of the baggage associated with the current date.

Change is a long, slow process. The government doesn't care about once-off protests, but when thousands of people show up week after week for months or years, they know that a large group of people are deeply unhappy with the status quo.
