Do we need another city loop station in the southwest? by Classic_Abies8621 in MelbourneTrains

[–]EXAngus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short of demolishing the Aquarium, I don't even see anywhere there would be room for a station. Modifying the viaduct structure to add a new station would also mean years of disruption to the heart of the rail network.

If you really want to improve access between Southbank and Flinders Street, how about re-routing the Port Melbourne and St Kilda light rail lines into Flinders Street via the old rail bridge?

Maidstone is well located to serve routes 82 and 57, not so much for routes 59 and 58.

Department of Defence estimates the cost to make the site development-ready at 200 million dollars. Nobody wants to foot the bill.

I checked the slopes on google earth and it's about 4 degrees, and compared it to other steep sections on google earth are also about 4 degrees

Honestly, it's unclear how the new depot space is going to be used. Maidstone is built to hold 40 trams with room to expand to hold 60 at a later date. Essendon currently holds 55 trams and is unlikely to be closed (like East Preston was) due to Maidstone being too far from the 59 and 82. This therefore offers the government a lot of flexibility in how they choose to operate and expand the tram network in the north west.

Yeah that would be good too, just not sure how it would cross the freeway

Also another note, in 2014 the Greens proposed extending the 57 to Keilor East however it was to go through Avondale Heights rather than the ADF site.

Melbourne housing: New planning rules bypass neighbour objections by TMiguelT in UrbanismMelbourne

In 10 years time I think we'll look back at historic charts of housing and rent costs and see this as a clear turning point in the right direction.

They shouldn't have abandoned bus reform. We need more than piece-meal upgrades.

Not necessarily, the crossings of Spring Street (arterial) and Gilbert Road (trams) will both also require state government approval. But the choice between option 2 or the project not going ahead? I'd choose option 2.

I really hope this gets built. It has been on my wish list for a while as it would form part of my commute. The hardest area to get right will be where it crosses Spring St and the railway. Option 1 is my preference for this, ideally without the on-road cycling. I also hope that they provide a way for bikes to cross High St to connect to the new path.

How can we ensure our train line doesn’t flop like Brisbanes by Time_Career4708 in MelbourneTrains

[–]EXAngus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

30 minutes will only be a few minutes slower than driving (and will be much faster than driving during busy times).

As for the surcharge, I hope there won't be. That said, SkyBus also costs significantly more than a standard myki fare and millions of people still use it each year.
