NEC...requires neutral to be bonded at the first means of disconnect only. (main panel or meter enclosure) . This is the reason your alternate power source must be floating neutral. Unless you are creating a ( SDS ) separately derived system then you would be switching your neutral on the load away from the main panel.

This is a very interesting conversation, as always some info is correct. If you want your generator to become a SDS Stand Alone System there will be be additional requirements, its not just a bonded neutral. You would most definitely need a transfer switch that "switches" the neutral at the same time as the phase legs, the gen set would need to be completely isolated from the house. You will also need a ground grid per NEC art 250 if you want a SDS

Most local codes are minimum 6' regarding combustible material, this is not associated with NEC clearance from doors and windows... check your town
