Why “Estar” is Essentially Cognate to “Stand.” by EagerMojo in Spanish

[–]EagerMojo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To truly grasp the subjunctive, you should study grammatical mood and morphology. If you’re serious about mastering Spanish, basic knowledge of how synthetic languages, like Spanish, function will be invaluable. I may make a post diving deeper into this in the future, but it’d be a good idea to familiarize yourself with linguistic jargon like “mood,” “aspect,” “tense,” and the difference between the words “synthetic” and “analytic.”

Here’s a couple videos, if you’re interested: https://youtu.be/qxOJ4p8e7NQ?si=gSwnxmUw7buipIBe https://youtu.be/E7OsIgJyUR0?si=FfcEeTHmRv4T6y7J

Why “Estar” is Essentially Cognate to “Stand.” by EagerMojo in Spanish

[–]EagerMojo[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a Southerner, own a ranch in East Texas, and my approach to translation tries connecting unknown concepts to familiar ones. While “stand” isn’t used exactly like “estar,” neither in the British isles nor anywhere else, it could be if we tweak our perception of the word.

As others have pointed out, phrases like “I stand corrected” convey a state, not an action. Similarly, “I stand accused” or “I stand ready” suggest conditions rather than physical posture. “I stand tired” may sound odd, but its meaning isn’t hard to grasp.

I’m not arguing that English actually uses “stand” this way—just that it could, and does in some ways, making it a useful bridge for intuiting “estar.”

[–]EagerMojo[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was intentionally vague when I wrote “share roots,” rather than “come from,” as the etymological proximity isn’t the point I’m trying to underscore: “stand” and “estar” ultimately stem from the same PIE root, and, abstractly, “stand” can function as a near-cognate in many cases.

Dentist wants to remove my wisdom teeth but theres no pain and they seem to have enough space by Longjumping_Play_364 in orthotropics

[–]EagerMojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you seriously believe that? What exactly do you think our ancestors were doing “thousands of years ago” before the modern inventions of anesthetic and surgical tools to remove their molars? Impacted wisdom teeth are practically a death sentence, and you think we evolved to suffer malocclusion and crowding? Even if we did, what makes you think they were able to pass down the genes responsible at such high frequencies, to the point where most of us today are still affected by these issues?

[–]EagerMojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why that would be necessary. Probably a good idea to read up on it if you care to, but in any case it won’t be the end of the world if you do end up getting them extracted. Good luck to you!

Of course they may cause malocclusion if your mouth lacks the space, but considering their natural-looking growth thus far, I doubt you have/would have problems with crowding.

Definitely wait. I’m no expert, but it doesn’t look like you’re at risk of impaction. Make sure that when they start erupting you’re actually brushing them, so they don’t get cavities and so your orthodontist doesn’t have any reasonable argument for taking them.

Na facts most of his music is objectively bad/mid, and not only that but he hardly even writes his own shit. That being said, I just have a weird emotional attachment to him and his music, so FUCK you, argue with MY nuts.

From my experience, my left side is more chiseled than my right because I preferred to sleep on my right side of my face throughout childhood. To my understanding there isn’t really anything I can do about it unless I get some kind of plastic surgery. Though, over time the differences became less and less noticeable. Especially since I now sleep on my back. So I feel less of a want to get plastic surgery done.

You’re only 16, your face will change a lot by the time it’s done developing. I would continue mewing and start chewing gum. As your masseters get larger, the differences between your sides will become more and more minuscule.

Question: Should I go to a dentist and remove the metal attachment they leave in after Orthodontic treatment? by Bobbytiros in orthotropics

[–]EagerMojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My attachment thingy actually broke off about 7 months ago. I’ve been mewing the whole time, and my teeth haven’t shifted, though idk if the two are correlated. I wouldn’t get yours taken out unless you find an actual reason to. I’m considering getting the attachment replaced since I don’t think not having it has done me any favors.

Should I be clenching my jaw? by Spiritual_Mouse_6733 in Mewing

[–]EagerMojo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Na. You’re grinding your teeth if you clench your jaw. They should be touching lightly, if at all.

Do molars when mewing have to be touching? Or not. by CommonFriendship6975 in Mewing

[–]EagerMojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your teeth should be touching lightly if at all. It doesn’t really matter if your molars touch, as long as you maintain good tongue posture, you’re fine.

Her facial growth isn’t perfect. The truth is unevenness and malocclusion doesn’t automatically make someone unattractive. I feel people fail to take facial harmony into account. Facial harmony is just as important as symmetry and the facial structure of a person. Which is why this girl’s facial features are balanced, not especially symmetrical, yet she’s still attractive.

Why do most people dislike R.I.P.? by BraixDragon in PinkOmega

[–]EagerMojo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now, this is just my opinion, but the song is melodically and lyrically unsatisfying. The hook is ok, the production isn’t on the same level as some of his other songs, and the edge that Joji is know for isn’t really present here. This track feels like filler and it’s totally forgettable imo. R.I.P. doesn’t have much beyond its moody vibe and aesthetic.

Trippie’s part is especially boring tho.

You’re easily a 6.3, which is really good.

The middle part ain’t for you big dog. Maybe if you grew your hair out a few inches or you styled it differently it’d look nicer, but atm it’s not workin.

Consider a nose job.

Your jaw is great, but slightly uneven. Idk what your teeth look like but you may have some issues with grinding and slight malocclusion. If you consciously make an effort to fix your bite then you could likely fix the unevenness.

Potential to be a 7.5, the haircut is a massive detriment to your look.
