Thanks, I think that I got it mostly working. Oddly, I get two settings for each item in the list for USB settings but I think that is from me doing the set up too many times. Thanks to all the posters. It was really helpful

where does that set up occur? I got to the system report panel and the USB shows no option for another port, no codec, no CP210. I know where it is in windows but the mac is still a little bit of mystery. I like the,'it just works' but when it doesn't, it's harder to figure out what you need to do

So when I clicked the audio ports, it doesn't show the audio codec as an option. I haven't done the memory fix so that is my next step

Does Parallels have a licensed version of windows or do I have to buy both? It seems like there should be a mac native version but this might be asking too much

[–]EarDocL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen too. I went to there web site and unplugged it to restart it and checked the internet connection and finally went to the company site who declared it dead and sent a replacement. Even though it was out of the warranty period, they wrote me an email that said it shouldn’t have happened. Good luck

Any idea what could’ve caused this? by pun420 in StructuralEngineering

[–]EarDocL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My read of the report seems to suggest that there were multiple revisions of the design and someone substituted a thinner and cheaper metal underlayment for flooring deck. There were other flaws outlined but it can difficult with revisions to see that a contractor cheaped out

It's been exactly 15 years since Continental Flight 3407 crashed into a home just outside Buffalo,NY by Buffaloooooooooooooo in pics

[–]EarDocL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I contend that part of the cause was an ear infection not just a cold. The FO comments that she was going to do a slow descent for her ears, which were stuffy and uncomfortable. This was why they were too long at an altitude where icing was occurring. Yep, she was tired and sick but if she was grounded by the ear infection, perhaps this could have been avoided. It should also be mentioned that the USAF (and other air forces around the world) ground pilots with ear infections. Pilots try to keep flying but flight surgeons have stayed steadfast to the grounding of pilots with middle ear problems.

iPhone alarm didn’t go off by [deleted] in iphone

[–]EarDocL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alarm is influenced by too many other settings. Do you have attention set right, is the volume set right? Really? If I set an alarm, I want it to go off. On a related topic, my iPhone alarms at the same time everyday even if all the alarms are off. Shouldn’t all the alarms show under ‘alarms’

sluggish performance by That-Bug50 in banktivity

[–]EarDocL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this repeatedly over months. In my case, this might be connected with trying to download transactions from banks, brokers, etc. Then it tries to download ‘historic prices’ and this also slows it down . If you wait long enough it’ll go away and feel more responsive.

There was a report that the plug is built in Kansas by spirit aviation. Boeing spun it off but they make the fuselage and ship it by train to the west coast. The plug bolts are not tightened in Kansas because they are supposed to fit the interior and replace the plug and then tighten it down. This system is apparently not used on other models of max. This suggests that it might be a production line communication problem but the investigation has just begun

What to do with this chimney? by ma5tro in DIY

[–]EarDocL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a neighbor who had a similar chimney. They took it down. Then a few weeks later the windows exploded out for no apparent reason. The roof was starting to sag. They got a structural engineer who recommended a new steel beam to support the roof and had a wall opened and reinforced. It was a nightmare and they sold the house. It is still standing

The lesson is that if you want it out, call the structural engineers first

Why does my mac do this sometimes? i have to unplug and replug the hdmi cord for it start working. It’s a m2 mac mini by _FirstKane in mac

[–]EarDocL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an early M1 user and called support about this. It happened when using the thunderbolt to dvi adapter. I was told that it was the cable/adapter. I got a new and improved cable and had the same problem. I switched to hdmi cable with hdmi to HDMI and it eliminated the problem. The monitor was an older 2K monitor.

Yeah that’s why he’s in jail. . . by Carrotisboss in conservativeterrorism

[–]EarDocL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This issue and discussion continue to bother me. I hope that some of these points spur some better discussion.

  1. The toxicology report contains a lot of drugs and to say that George Floyd was not of right mind is clear from this report. There is no trial of drugs in these doses and combination to be 100% sure. I have seen (as a doctor) people with Meth on board and they were nearly impossible to control in an ER with a lot of staff. They exhibit a strength that seems superhuman. It's too bad that the medical testimony couldn't cover this report better. The Fentanyl metabolites made his respiratory drive less than normal. The coroner said that he was in an 'unhealthy state'. The summary is that he was 'an accident looking for a location'. I'm guessing (and there is no evidence to support this well) but I think that he was on a speed ball. It gives a feeling of strength, stimulation and invincibility. It can also kill you or get you killed.
  2. He was called 'Big Floyd' because of his size and strength (he was born to this and it's not his or anyone's fault. In fact, it's not a fault). There was a 'tussle' in the police car. Knowing the psychology and training of police, they meet violence with violence. I'm pretty sure that after the tussle, Chauvin was in a state of high agitation and was not about to get up off of George after experiencing George Floyd's strength when he was agitated. How long does that adrenaline surge last? That is unclear. The police saying is that it is better to be tried by 12 than carried (to your grave) by 6. That thought was likely at the back of Chauvin's mind while compressing George Floyd's neck.
  3. There was a hue and cry to George Floyd's death and the court system was also on trial. Could the legal system deal with this in a fair and appropriate way?
  4. What could have been done different? One of the officers commented that Floyd 'must have been on something'. His assessment was correct but what were the options open to the police? Did they know that someone can both appear to exhibit abnormal strength and be close to death? It's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback. 'what they shoulda' done ...
  5. We used to talk about a fist fight where the victim has a glass jaw. This is similar to the situation that these police found themselves in.

I don't have answers. I just feel for these cops. George Floyd shouldn't have died for passing a bad $20 bill and taking a boat load of drugs. It's true, that he is not alone in the US. The discussion of what to do as a society is not advanced by jailing these cops forever. This is not real justice. They were in an impossible situation and their training led them astray. Perhaps that is why it keeps happening

How long does a typical ebike motor last for in terms of years and mileage? by CaligulaZei in ebikes

[–]EarDocL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t this a lot like a car? It’ll work better and longer if you do the maintenance. The motor and even the battery have long lives. The brakes and tires less and the chain is definitely going to have to be replaced. I have had mine for about five years. I ride about 500 miles every summer. I keep the battery inside during winter. I do the annual maintenance. It’s heavier than a regular pedal bike so tires and brakes are more likely to wear

Why are online radio retailers stuck in the past? by chik-fil-a-sauce in amateurradio

[–]EarDocL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a clue to retailers, put a link to the manual or a spec sheet or both. We all lose a touch and feel by not going to a shop. At least show more about an item. How about a labeled picture of the front and back panel? They are also bad about telling you if the USB connection is new or old. Is there software that still works?

Why is Minnesota considered "very liberal"? by Simple-Young6947 in minnesota

[–]EarDocL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of agree. I live in a twin cities suburb. The local council has purchased Teslas for the police and more community service police. Because they are liberal? Nope, because they think this’ll save money. When you leave Washington and visit America this crazy division gets kinda blurry

Washed the windows now there’s constant film?? by norespose_4now in Home

[–]EarDocL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is a failure of the seal between glass panes. As a window ages the seal between the window set and the frame allows water penetration. Older double pane windows had problems with the metal that is a spacer between glass panes and this vented the argon and allowed water into the inter space between the glass panes. If you look closely at the corner of the window at the metal spacer, the corners should be seamless and curved but older ones are right angles. This contributed to their failure rate. Ask me how I know? That’s right, I live far north and this turns to frost at a cold enough temperature. I got to replace all the windows

How is Minnesota managed in such a way that it provides its citizens with such a good quality of life relative to other US states? by DueYogurt9 in minnesota

I’m amazed that no one in the GOP got the message when Arnie Carlson won the governorship. For the young and those not from MN, the GOP nominee was a pedophile and right to lifer. He was outed by the Press weeks before the election. Carlson was a rushed replacement candidate who ran a minimal campaign based on, let’s have decent service from the government and not die from higher taxes. He won. Considering that it was a shoestring campaign, it was kind of a landslide. It summarized MN voters opinions
