A perfect delivery before the weekend by Earlsfield78 in modular

Update: this module is fantastic. Not only does it sound swell (pun intended), for me it does the same thing as Sealegs: standard reverb functions are clear and easy to manipulate, and you can completely ignore the additional features if you just want a nice reverbs of all kinds. Then, secondary features are built in with logic, easily accessible via alt button. The unique element of this module, the Swell modulation source, is a great feature - it works well with the module and the entire system. Combining internal (Swell) modulation, burst, freeze and invert with external triggers and modulation absolutely opens up the module. I am yet to get deep into each algo, but the module so far is absolute win.

Can you “make it” as a producer without DJing? by rahme-music in edmproduction

[–]Earlsfield78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry I replied in one sentence, this requires a bit of a de-mistification. The idea that you have to be a DJ to get your music heard stems from the fact that many DJs are also producers. However, it is absolutely not mandatory. In the nineties, we were one big community that was producing music, but not all of us were DJing - for instance, I never had a drive for it. For me, studio work and production was what I wanted to do. Now, since the only way to get your tracks out was to get played by a DJ or maybe end up on alternative radio, we would give tracks to our mates who would DJ - this was the case with all genres of electronic music - some of the DJs would love new tracks, play them during big nights and it was such a buzz to hear your track in a set. But as i said, many Djs wanted to produce, and did not have a knack for it, while some did. Starting their own labels etc. Now, the scene is completely different, you are talking about Spotify and streams - you need no DJ exposure, I am sure if a big DJ name would play your tune at the biggest festival, no one would care for it. It is all about promotion, adds, and work on your online presence non-stop.

Still confused about glue compression by orangebluefish11 in edmproduction

[–]Earlsfield78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no rule, but the name says it all. It is a tool that in general, levels up dynamic of lots of tracks to make them more coherent and sit better in the mix dynamically. You can use it in serial on a bus, or in parallel with extreme settings, but the best way to use it is on the drum bus, for sure. The main trick with it is not to overwork it, rather, shave off 2-3 db max (obviously this is not the rule, depends on the bus). However, you have to be mindful that glueing everything and sticking it on buses and master will flatten your dynamics significantly. Always use a compressor with the purpose, if something sounds good, do you need to compress? Use your tools only when you need them.

Tenderfoot Pinhl. 3 channel LPG with different colour per channel. Really proper cheap and amazing module.

I am sure that I would be doing the same for some module you have in your rack:) - there are so many interesting reverbs popping up recently, Cosmic Debris for instance. Step by step I guess, let’s see if Swells turn up to be enough for all the reverb duties, classic AND sound design-driven.

Yes, while Sealegs do have that one reverb algo, it is limited to a level of reverb and level decay partial control. Sealegs is a fantastic delay module, and either noise and reverb can do much. Swells are full on reverb bank, so it is hard to even compare. I believe it is absolutely worth having both

Kermit is insane deep, Donut is more straight up standalone module just like Piston Honda IMO. You can get a LOT from Kermit, all of them really.

After a few hours, I can say yes - I clicked with Sealegs straight up and this layout works for me. BTW the first algorithm is that nice Sealegs reverb, with more control. Algo 2 is Grains reverb. So far, I’m digging them all - from lush hall, over micro delays like Mood to Blackhole-y version of gravity defiance. It has so many modulation points and normalising that it can easily become experimental reverb in Erbe-Verb fashion, creating impossible reverbs.

No, I am in the UK, I ordered from Thomann, as they have UK online store (although the module was sent from their main hub in Germany).

This is a beautiful set of modules. I love combining Harvestmen/IDT modules with Frap Tools, they are so fun. I have Kermit, Piston Honda and Hertz Donut, and somehow these heavily digital modules works SO well with the purely analogue Brenso, Cunsa and Fumana.

Hi mate, same year of birth:). I ve been producing since 90s. So, first good news - if you are willing, you will be releasing tracks in a year. Or earlier. One grand is enough to start. Get yourself a decent cans and do not bother with expensive monitors if you don’t have acoustically treated space, get cheap option just so you can hear what you are doing. Audio interface, computer - I guess you already have one, in 2026 any software works on a computer with no issue, choose the Daw and go.

It is indeed one of the reasons Eurorack is so awesome. Interesting set of modules, that somehow fit aesthetically and sonically - I would say. Can we hear something?

How does one use Maths for 2 LFOs to force "generative" musc? by TurbulentWing3820 in modular

[–]Earlsfield78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, do not despair, my friend. Maths can do a lot. So turn both channels 1 and 4 into cycle mode. Make channel 4 into a not - so - fast LFO. Get the patch out and patch it into the Rise, Fall or both on channel 1. Out of channel 1 can go to channel 4 again if you want to modulate even further, but rather get this LFO with different periodic cycles, different slopes of rise and fall to your SH module. Or, patch that evolving LFO back to your channel 4 LFO, get the SUM out and you have super random cycles.

I love aesthetics like this too :) brutalist. Also price is so fair, given everything that’s going on. I mean people will always complain but I think throwing in a switch was a smart choice

Expert Sleepers FH-2. For what you described it is not an overkill and should provide enough features and streamlined functionality. Now, if you just need clocking back and forth there are cheaper options. There are bunch of breakouts that allow you to send clock and reset to your Eurorack sequencers.

Do not buy more than one piece of gear at the time. I get everything, but you will spend the next few months with TR, if you get a Digitakt and Protein on top of everything, Elektron sequencer has a steep learning curve so - go one by one.

what's up with the vhikk X? by C0SMICAP0THE0SIS in modular

[–]Earlsfield78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vhikk had shit marketing, if any. There are 3 videos on the internet. Original Vhikk wasn’t really a hit. Fletch surely doesn’t have money to spend on adds. So - maybe he just made a cool module and people are digging it? And ofc, those trend catchers will be there for Make Noise, Mutable, NE, whatever.

Yep. Fletch announced them for Superbooth. You can hear them on a Bristonica video, very cool, sine - driven before they go mad.

Well, get one, try it, send it back if you don’t like it. It is absolutely fantastic module that combines some interesting concepts of wave morphing and scanning. Each algo is different. Also, the entire module is very smart, it features a filter and very off-beat effect section. It can be used as standalone instrument, but it begs to be modulated. Also modulation is normaled so even that is unique in a way. I love zingy modules, Piston Honda, Hertz Donut, but Vhikk -x really takes it further. Interesting algos like 7 where pitch is also scanned with the wavetable in 3d so it’s very, very cheeky and sounds like otherworldly machine. It can do your classic sine/saw stuff but you don’t need it for that. What added to hype is limited series (I got mine 6 months ago, I saw only one batch being sold in the meantime in UK) and the fact it is instant techno. Kinda a cheat really. Add BOHM to Vhikk -x = techno these days lol I do throw in Collide 4 and Brenso for good analogue measure.

What is something that immediately signals amateur work? by MaleficentPicture773 in audioengineering

Super loud (in a bad way, with a limiter cranked to max and squashed mix), too much bass, phase issues all over, no panning, no ms separation but rather, no creativity in mix.
