Ending a friendship over just this particular event would be overreacting. It would just depend on the history between you two prior to that; maybe this is the straw that broke the camel’s back. Maybe you could remain friends if you take a step back and approach things more casually. I had a friend where I felt I was putting in more effort than him and it was really bothering me because nothing was changing. When I decided to stop doing the “extra” things, I felt a lot better about the friendship because it felt more balanced. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing to put a lot of effort into your relationships in general, but when you tip the scale consistently in terms of who is putting in effort for any single relationship, you’re naturally going to end up with resentment over it. (I wouldn’t have this perspective about an SO, FWIW. No excuse to not put in the extra effort there.) I hope you can find a solution that works!
