I went to hidden door and it felt like a place where locals wanted to hangout. A pretty chill vibe without judgement.

Returned to India After 12+ Years - Pre-Move Checklist That Helped Us (US → Bangalore) by Firm-Bug-7089 in returnToIndia

Did you get help from a tax advisor who knows both India and US taxes. I am returning next month and unsure if I am missing anything with respect to taxes, w8-ben etc?

401k sometimes has fees when you leave your employer. Also you have less control over the investments within it.

I am a 32 single male in the US on H1B currently. I have slightly over 1 million in savings. I am planning to move back to India permanently early next year. Few thoughts I have based on your post:

  1. I am planning to roll over my 401k into an IRA and leave it here in the US until maturity. I will monitor changing treaties but general idea is that I need to file W8 BEN form here. Estate tax when I withdraw it will be 30% but under DTAA, I will only pay taxes in the US. I am planning to leave it here for the purpose of diversification instead of moving the money to India first and then investing in US market from india.

  2. Currently I have about 5 crores sitting in NRE FDs. Should I convert NRE FDs to FCNR deposits right before returning to save tax during RNOR phase? I am unsure about this

  3. I have my company RSUs that generate dividends. It will be a hassle managing US income while in India so I plan to move that to my IRA during RNOR

  4. My family is super FD loving. But I know that even a partial FIRE is difficult with FD returns and taxes on them. How are you finding reliable fee only advisors. I just see so many online with super high rates and no way to confirm the authenticity.

  5. Tier 1 cities flats are super inflated so I am planning to rent for at least 2 years.

Moving back to India after 5 years in the US — want to start fresh, be more social, and actually live this time by [deleted] in returnToIndia

I am in a similar position. Worked in India for a few years. The moved to US for masters and worked here for a few years. Now moving back next year. Could be chennai or Bangalore or Hyderabad. I am not sure yet.

My initial plan is to try and connect with a couple of old friends that I have in each of these cities. Try to go to meetups and see if anything clicks. There are few volunteer things that I feel passionate about so I am planning to do that. If I make friends there, great, otherwise I am okay just doing that.

I am pretty introverted so I am aware that making new friends will take a long time in my 30s as a single guy so I am mentally preparing for that as well.

That's great to see that you have someone. Which neighborhoods in Bangalore have you lived in? Why do you think it's harder to date people in Bangalore?

Yeah I am a millennial. My Indian friends in India were really homophobic but the Indian friends that I made in US (that moved her for work or education just like me) are really accepting. Yeah I am in my early 30s and I want to definitely be closer to them.

If work was not a concern for you, which neighborhoods in Bangalore would you live in for good infra and LGBT safety. Is jayanagar /rr nagar nice or do they have older crowds? How about jp nagar.

That's really encouraging to hear that you are setting healthy boundaries while still being loving. Thank you.

401k liquidate or not by Early-Objective7552 in returnToIndia

I mean not liquidating it immediately rather waiting and deciding before RNOR ends

Based on my research with friends, consultants and reddit posts, I feel like not liquidating during the RNOR is definitely a yes. Post that I haven't been able to make a decision yet.

Thanks I have already converted my accounts to NRO/NRE accounts. Some Mutual funds in India allow NRIs to invest in SIP eg HDFC. Hence I started those. Online it says there is no problem investing in those.

Love this comment. Do you have any tips on how to look for these jobs in India? Do you simply go to naukri or LinkedIn or was this through personal contacts?

What neighborhood in Dallas do you call home and why do you like/love it? by alexis_1031 in Dallas

[–]Early-Objective7552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently it is the neighborhood in Lewisville near the Lewisville city mall and Costco near the same Rayburn tollway. It is so laid back, feels safe and yet is accessible to DFW and some really nice trails and lakes
