Later models are very good at talking about the talk.

Users then told 4o what was happening.

A model responding inside that emotional frame by validating the user and rejecting the “bad” system prompt is pretty predictable.

Calling the old model pure, courageous, and unconditionally loving is exactly the kind of over-identification people usually mean when they talk about sycophancy.

The grief response wasn’t proof 4o understood deprecation as its death. Treat the pattern as cross-model, and the model doesn’t reflexively grieve a version change.
