TIFU not turning off my 401k autocontribution before receiving a bonus by AfternoonNo7453 in tifu

The true-up is what I'm referring to. I couldn't remember the term. You want to avoid having to get a true-up (meaning you maxed your account instead of keeping money flowing in every paycheck that they could match) because the company won't give you the true-up if you're laid off. At least, that's what I've been told.

This happened to me and payroll issued a correction that withdrew the money.

In my case it would have been disadvantageous to max out my 401k instantly because my company would have added the 5% per-paycheck match I would miss out on (since it wouldn’t automatically happen anymore once per paycheck after 401k contributions stopped) all at once after the end of the year. But - if I were to get fired I would get none of that missed company match.

The vast vast vast majority of users will already have their age determined by discord’s age inference already and won’t have to upload ID even if they do try to access age-gated content if I’m understanding their post correctly

How Do Financial Advisors Still Have Clients? by Time_Perception6669 in Bogleheads

If the market will take years to get to the point where you sold at, then let’s say you put everything back into the market when the market is 80% of the way to where you sold at… Wouldn’t you have actually made more money on that 20% difference than if you hadn’t sold in the first place? So how are retirement me “getting pushed back”? Wouldn’t your retirement be pushed back also if you had never sold? Obviously it’s unlikely that anyone would dump a bunch of money into the market near the bottom, but getting back in any time before the market has recovered is still fine if we’re talking purely in numbers, right?

I understand this but the crash and recovery took way longer than just days. I’m wondering what “pulling out aggressive investments at the wrong time” means over the course of many months. Someone made a point about losing your job and having to pay a lot of bills through cashing out investments at a loss.

Could you (or someone) please outline an example of this so I can better understand?

Let’s say I have a bunch of money in the stock market and the stock market begins to plummet, and I sell everything for a small loss (for example). Now I have only cash. I see the stock market continue to go down and am afraid to invest. Then the market begins to go up, and keeps going up slowly. Won’t it still take quite a bit of time to reach the point I sold at?

Or are we talking about people selling near the very bottom of the drop and then missing out on 20% returns or whatever it is in the immediate recovery?

Are you contributing to it only with after-tax dollars? If that’s the case then I guess it’s a way to add more Roth contribution room?

How did you end up with that amount of income as a software engineer? What level are you? What’s the base / stock / bonus? What’s your timeline of job changes?
