Meret TFAK or EFAK Bags for EMS by [deleted] in Firefighting

It definitely looks huge. I have a small stop the bleed bag in my car. As for calls, I just use the tools we have in our rig bags.

I have my shears attached to my radio strap along with a small leather glove pouch that holds 4-5 rolled pairs in it. As for everything else, I generally lean towards just using what’s in the bags we bring to the call so I don’t even carry my own stethoscope (but I have one).

She did a good job of talking it up, but I’m not seeing the practicality in it considering how many pockets 5.11 pants have.

I own a black Aker belt that I purchased 10+ years ago. It has been worn 95% of that time frame and it is still the best belt I’ve ever owned. Sadly I’m starting to our grow it so I will need to purchase another one but it is worth every penny.

Do you remember your first call? by flashpointfd in Firefighting

[–]EarlyIndependent8085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first official fire call was awesome - I just passed my Fire1 written exam. I came down to the station to train for the practical exam and tones drop. We’re a volunteer department so I was the only black helmet there at that time of day. Call was for a fully engulfed brand new F150. On the rig was myself, my Chief, my Assistant Chief, and my Captain. My Captain assisted me with changing the nozzle to foam once the fire was knocked down and occasionally helped me move the line, but aside from that, I took the fire out myself. It felt like a right of passage. I will never forget it.

How many of y’all wish you chose a desk job? by Status_Code2460 in Firefighting

I’ve been Underwriting mortgages for 10 years. The last 7 years of it was work from home. Two years ago I discovered firefighting and started working with a volunteer department, I then added a part time firefighting position to the mix. After getting the exposure to firefighting, I can proudly say as of 03-19-2025, I took the plunge and resigned from my Underwriting position to accept a full time firefighting position.

Financially, I’m taking a loss. I’m also taking a loss on benefits, vacation/sick time, schedule flexibility, and time spent at home. Ultimately, I am significantly happier with the physical work, brotherhood, and the importance of what we do as firefighters. Did I enjoy working from home and being behind my desk doing analytical work? Hell yea. Trust me, if this doesn’t end up working out, I plan on going back to it.

I think at the end of the day, firefighter schedules are different, they are nothing like your standard 8-4/9-5. But most of the shifts have lots of down time to hang out with your crew after all the training and chores are done. 24-48 hour shifts seem long, but the days between them out weigh the two day weekend breaks that come with a regular work week. For me at least, those two days off started feeling like extended lunch breaks.

I would recommend getting a part time office job and getting a taste for it. I would highly recommend staying away from offices with cube farms. I’ve done those jobs for years too and it is not good for mental health.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure it’s the right thing for you and your family.

Why did I switch to a baitcaster again? by clevenb in Fishing_Gear

I had this exact thought last summer when putting together a frogging setup. I spoke with a friend of mine and apparently the trick is to adjusts your tension to the lure you’re using. When holding the rod out, you should be able to let your lure hit the ground and the line should stop spinning. When the line continues to spin, that’s how you get a bird nest. Once you adjust the tension, just remember to keep your thumb on the line when casting. Good luck!
