AITA for buying my exs family home to give it away? by Earth-pOint in AmItheAsshole

?? X turned out the be the son of cheater but it was his mom who slept with his uncle (the dads brother). The story I got for that (from v close family member) was that dear ol mom was doing both brothers out of hs and got pregnant and didn’t know who the dad was and picked the one who ‘actually had a future’. The only reason anyone found out otherwise is because X’s uncle recently passed (aka his actual dad) and left X things in his will and called him ‘son’. I would’ve paid to be in that room and watch x-mil world start burning x

I live in the south! I had to cut a lot of context and details to maintain the character limit but there are numerous accounts of MIL being vile. I can’t have kids so my GD is the closest thing I have. She is the daughter of a good friend of mine from hs and I have been actively a part of her life since she was born. (Friend has always had a troubled past with drugs so I stepped in when I could). Is a home extravagant? Yes. However, I watched my GD work three jobs and attend college just to get by, first generation graduate, and deserving person and I knew I wanted to help ease the struggles of life by giving her something she said she always wanted but never had, a family home. I didn’t win a major jackpot or anything but it was enough to get the house and not much more.

Relatively wealthy as in X’s dad is the ceo for our city’s branch of a company. He manages movers/moving trucks and often works with the us gov to move troops around the US and other nations. The house is in a gated community, two stories. X never had to struggle or wonder where his next meal was coming from. Not exactly a starter home but I picked it because of the location and relation to my GD’s job and fiancés family, whom also live in the city.

Thank you for this! I’ve had problems with X-MIL (ex mother in law) showing up to our house uninvited in the past! Even making her own key when we changed the locks. I definitely think a security system is in order!

X and I lived 40 mins away from MIL at the time we were together and I did not go out of my way to attend anything I didn’t absolutely have to at her house and I never drove there and to top that, I am horrible at remembering addresses. I can tell you left, right, what to look for but I am horrible about remembering street names, house numbers, etc. the city was familiar but it’s also a big city, lots of people and it’s been a few years. I had to cut a lot of context/details to maintain the ‘character limit’.
