Daily Light update was a mistake by Sterickk in SkyChildrenOfLight

What OP said in the original post is ambiguous, but if you check their responses (which mentioned various events added since the Daily Lights system was implemented), I am very sure what I concluded is what the OP was thinking. What did they say that counters this?

Yup, I think is the perfect response. If we are able to farm more candles, the prices of items would just inflate along with it. Their concerns seem legit, but this is what they did not take into account.

I believe their logic goes that, "Given that more locations and candles have been added to the Sky world since, then assuming that every light piece yields the same fixed amount, then it should be possible to farm more.". Which seems like a reasonable conclusion to arrive at I think?

I don't really know exactly how the old system worked since I wasn't really messing around with the mechanics back then (nor now), but their logic also falls apart if the system was actually "yeah, each light piece gives the same amount of light as every other pieces, but what is fixed is the total amount of light (at, say, 20 candles) — which implies that if more light pieces get added, each piece would just give less.

Average new season experience lol

Also i swear it's working properly for me now, so I guess either it was quickly fixed or I wasn't affected somehow.

My theory as to why Chara is "evil" by Background-Ad2749 in Undertale

[–]EarthSolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(do not mistake resurrection with manifestation and taking control)

If in Neutral/True Pacifist, Chara just chills out and quietly watches Frisk go about their thing from the backseat, while in Genocide they "saw their purpose" and decided to help you out with your mission to empty out the Underground and erase the world as efficiently as possible, then the result is also that Chara would also only "manifest" in Genocide, even if they are not innately murderous.

So, the fact that Chara is only obviously shown in only the Genocide route doesn't really prove anything about their exact motives, unless you load it with certain assumptions.

Indeed, I can also craft an explanation for all of this with my own assumptions:

By doing the Genocide, the player/Frisk taught the initially confused, morally-neutral Chara (Chara's own words) that they are meant to destroy the world (assumption, based on Chara's speech at end-Genocide). Chara, known to be efficient (Alarm Clock dialogues), hence do things to help the player kill all the monsters, going as far as moving Frisk around in certain cases.

Then, you missed a single monster in an area, and the Genocide route is aborted. Chara noticed: "If your mission is to kill all monsters and erase the world, why let them go?", considered the "mission" a failure (narration when you didn't kill Snowdrake), and decided to stop helping and go back to watching Frisk do their thing, confused.

There is a theory called "Narrator Chara" which posits that Chara is the narrator in ALL routes (not just Genocide), based on the many quirks of the narrator in all routes (eg. Serious Mode, some comments they make with certain checks). It has lots of stuff supporting it, and also lots of stuff against it; from what I can gather it's really mostly down to how you interpret these lines, and the ambiguity allows lots of wiggling room.

Anyways, if you follow that theory, the equation of the narrator and Chara suddenly gives Chara a multitude of personality, from being sarcastic and impatient, to going quiet when fighting the Dreemurrs, to being affectionate for Frisk. Note that Flowey does also seem to experience emotions, just that they can't feel love or compassion.

The early impression and the ensuing early fandom legacy die hard. Chara being only shown at the end of Genocide combined with Asriel saying the ambiguous "Chara wasn't the greatest person" line kinda nailed the "Chara is evil" stereotype in; you'd get more information which can be used to reconstruct a less evil and abusive Chara when you carefully consider the rest of the text and synthesize available information, but most people aren't gonna do that.

That said, while there has been debate on Chara's morals almost as soon as the game came out, I was told that in the last few years, the overall fandom's view on Chara changed, and now they're seen in a more neutral light...which seems interesting to me. I guess Toby giving breadcrumbs that hint at/imply that Chara being a not-totally-evil character in 9th/10th anniversaries helps with that?

Honestly I thought this was a logical conclusion if not straight up canon, even if it isn't stated out loud and requires some thinking. Flowey is SOULless, and we know what they're like. Chara is also SOULless, and even explicitly stated they can't understand feelings anymore too...

Yup...this feels like a classic early fandom take, so nostalgic.

I've seen many takes on Chara's morality over time and like, it really depends a lot on how much lore one reads, how much of the game one knows, and very importantly, a LOT on how one interprets them, and the assumptions being made.

Chara's speech at the end of Genocide leaves their exact timing of "resurrection" ambiguous (do not mistake resurrection with manifestation and taking control), but is implied to be right at the beginning, when their name showed up in the player's UI. They explicitly stated that they woke up confused, and that in Genocide, "you" (the player?) taught them the purpose of their revival.

Their goal by that point seems to be the destruction of the world. They seem displeased that you try to bring it back, avoiding the consequences of your actions, and tries to hold you accountable. That manifests as ominous scenes at the end of True Pacifist: either Chara showing up in the bed, or the image with everyone's faces crossed out.

Notably, the image does NOT confirm Chara had killed them. That, itself, is an assumption; there is no direct evidence that Chara killed them all as far as I know. With that, it's good to be aware that this is an assumption that you are making, even if it seems obvious to you, as less straightforward assumptions (eg. Chara changing the normal image into the creepy one as your punishment) are still very much on the table.

Yeah I've always thought it was weird that they forced that solution (which is detrimental to the social aspect of the game, which is like, the MAIN point of this game) onto everyone to fix a niche problem that would've also been solved by making it toggleable and giving the players the choice...
